SLOW JUICER VS CENTRIFUGAL
What is the difference?
‘Jet, do I need to buy myself a slow juicer now?’ The answer I normally give is: Yeah well, I’m a sucker for supersonic kitchen appliances, but those things are crazy expensive and you can also make a perfect juice in a blender or a normal centrifugaljuicer. Unless you really love washing dishes, I wouldn’t choose the slow juicer, because every little part of that beast needs to be washed by hand. juicer. Unless you really love washing dishes, I wouldn’t choose the slow juicer, because every little part of that beast needs to be washed by hand.
The flip side being that the juice from the slow juicer is more concentrated. This is because the fruits and vegetables first go through a process of being crushed and ground and then the pulp is given a final squeeze. In a centrifugal system the fruit and vegetables only pass once through a type of shredder, spinning out the juice and leaving behind lots of pulp with, which can still have juice left in it. Complicated? Let me highlight a few of these differences a little further for you.
¿How much does it cost?
A slow juicer is expensive. You should be thinking along the lines of around 250 euro. A good centrifugal juicer you buy for about 80 euros. That’s quite the difference.
Full glass of juice
As I mentioned, the juice from a slow juicer is much more concentrated. This is an important factor. Another advantage of the slow juicer is that you can juice ginger, chillies or herbs and still get a decent amount of juice from them. Even from small fruits such as raspberries. With a centrifugal juicer this is a lot more difficult. Juicing these sorts of small items gives just pulp but not much juice. Usually I throw these things in the blender along with the juice.
An advantage of the centrifugal system is that you don’t have to chop up the fruit and vegetables into such small pieces, because the part where you feed them into is much larger.
Doing dishes
The same applies to both appliances; a hellish job. Not all parts are dishwasher proof, but must be fully cleaned by hand with a small special brush. And god forbid that you let it sit for a day without washing. It’ll be covered in flies and the pulp will be so caked on it will be impossible to remove.
Waste
With both systems you’ll be left with a lot of pulp waste. The advantage of a slow juicer is that you can reuse this pulp to make something else. For example use it in soups or in vegetable burgers. With a centrifugal juicer, the pulp is much rougher and will probably contain chunks of fruit and vegetable including remnants of stalks, stems and seeds.
Music
This point is obvious. A slow juicer gives off a very soft buzzing sound while the centrifugal juicer can be quite the screamer.
Easy on the eye
When it comes to appearance there are quite some differences, but nothing too dramatic. Both are quite big and like most things, the more expensive the device, the more beautiful the design.
