The super handsome identical twins Frank and Bas van de Brug are the founders of Colourful Rebel. And if you know Colourful Rebel, you undoubtedly know that they designed the Boef sweater. We were incredibly curious about what their life looks like after this success and also asked them about their weekend. Read along...
Super fun that we can interview you guys! Have you had a busy week with all sorts of fun things?
Yeah, quite a bit, we just got back from Ibiza and are now in Barcelona. Work just keeps going, so we try to do that as much as possible in the mornings while everyone here is still sleeping off their hangover.
You recently opened your first Colourful Rebel store: was it exciting and how long did you work towards that?
Exciting is always the case, but actually, it went very quickly. We wanted to do a pop-up store for a week, but that felt just a bit off. Especially because we want to create an experience and you don't set up the whole place for just a week with a pop-up. Then we coincidentally got an offer for this building at Van Woustraat 52 and that was absolutely perfect. The price was good, everything was right, and we said “yes” and signed within five minutes. Two months later we opened, and it’s exceeding expectations. We are now working on a second store in Antwerp.
Now time to rest a bit or does the Boef chaos just keep going?
I think that chaos will continue for a while, but especially all the other designs, sweaters, and shirts without prints are on the rise. It's nice to see because it takes away the fear of a one-day fly a bit.
How did you actually come up with the idea of Colourful Rebel?
Bas started an online magazine one day because we wanted a platform where men could find everything: small funny articles, but also stories from our travels, about other inspiring entrepreneurs, etc. Later it turned out that this was a perfect springboard to launch our own clothing brand due to the large number of followers.
At first, you were mainly focused on men, now there are increasingly more female influences visible on the website. What can we expect for the future?
A good friend of ours, we call her Snoeki, helps us enormously with the blog. She is creative, writes well, and has tons of cool ideas. She is also going out more to find hotspots in Paris or Barcelona, trying that hugely popular juice cleanse, testing dating sites, lots of funny and recognizable things. She actually has the ideal job; paid to go to Paris or Barcelona to find hotspots or do fun things at the boss's expense! We would love to write every day and be busy with the blog, but that’s just not feasible now that we are expanding Colourful Rebel as a clothing brand.
Do you have a dream that you would like to see come true?
I think we are right in the middle of that now, haha.
It's almost the weekend: how are you ringing it in this week? Separately or together? A quiet evening at home or enjoying a vacation with a cocktail in hand?
We are together with nine friends having cocktails in Barcelona, just a little break from Boef sweaters, but sun!
What does your ideal weekend look like? Money and time are no object, so go wild.
Frank: Then I must admit that I would take all my friends for a few weeks of backpacking. I think in South America. I did that with four friends in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, and that is still one of my favorite vacations.
Do you have guilty pleasures on the weekend?
Frank: Working, does that count? Besides that, I can secretly enjoy it when I haven’t been out, get up early on Saturday, and then cruise around the city on my scooter. Having tea here, a sandwich there. Often I go to work out with Jasper, a good friend, on Saturday, sauna afterwards, and then cooking. Actually, I sound pretty boring when I hear myself like this, haha.
Last question: is there an alarm going off on Monday? If so, for what?
Yes, definitely, early too. They are coming to install the new kitchen in our office, we have an appointment with a headhunter, with our producer, things are being adjusted in the store because there is currently not enough space for all the clothing, and we have an appointment with a large department store. Busy day then!
