I may have hopped from paper to digital, but my love for magazines remains. As long as they are made with love and taste, like Jan Magazine, one of my favorite magazines. Esther has been working there since the very beginning (“we spent night after night working on Jan with wine and cigarettes”) and has been the editor-in-chief for years of perhaps the most fun magazine in the country. Because it is hard work, the weekend is celebrated. Exuberantly.
What time does your weekend start today? And is something flowing in the glass at that moment?
“Oh yes, the weekend starts with a glass of wine, of course! At 5 o'clock, and with nice weather like today, even at half past 4, the cork from the bottle pops here in the office. We sit in our canal garden, which borders Anne Frank's, at a large wooden table, eating ridiculous amounts of chips. Especially thanks to the cheerful presence of interns, who of course become more and more open about their weekend plans, this is usually a wonderfully exuberant start to the weekend.”
And how does such a Friday evening continue? I can really imagine something with long tables, many children, and good food at your place...
“Sometimes, when the urge to drink lingers, I spontaneously dive into the café nearby with my husband and children where we meet friends, and usually stay too long until the kids beg us to go home. Or, like tonight, we go out to eat in the city with friends. But we also sometimes watch a movie with the whole family and just lounge around on the couch.”
It's still vacation, so your Saturday is not dictated by hockey training and other obligations. How do you fill it in now? What are you going to do this Saturday?.
“I am looking forward to this beautiful late summer for a weekend at the beach in IJmuiden where we have a summer house. Hanging in the fatboys, splashing around at sea, having coffee with my sister-in-law who is also there with her kids, and if I'm in a good mood, I might even go for a run on the beach. My ultimate relaxing weekend.”
What is being read and listened to in the Goedegebuure household on the weekend?
“When I have read the weekend editions of Parool, NRC, and FD amidst all the obligations and social activities, I am really very happy. Indeed with a coffee and music, depending on who is operating the Sonos and Spotify, that is classical (my husband) and top 40 (my son). What I also enjoy is Cherie Lounge, a French radio station that you can listen to via Spotify.”
And, sorry, I am always quite curious about what is on the plate. Who cooks on Saturday? And what? Or do you leave that to others?
“If we are lucky, my son makes sushi, he is incredibly good at it. The kids often dive into the kitchen on weekends, resulting in me eating way too much cake. Furthermore, I cook, delicious if I may say so myself, because when I have time, I want to do my best. I love Ottolenghi, or a family favorite, chicken with lemon and celery root from the oven. I find Saturday a cozy day to eat with friendly families, at our home, in the garden. Now in the summer with barbecue and extra salads.‘
Does Sunday have a different color than Saturday? What does your ideal Sunday look like?
“The ideal Sunday is simple and empty, and therefore a rarity. Starting with running, coffee, the rest of the newspaper, and then something fun like visiting an exhibition early in the morning. I am not a late sleeper, so I often have the luck of a quiet, unawakened city. Being outside and moving (walking, cycling) is also nice for me.”
If earthly matters like time difference, babysitters, and a healthy bank balance did not exist, what would your dream weekend look like? Breakfast in Paris, dinner at Matisse in Bali, something like that?
“Once a year, I go with my husband, brother, and sister-in-law for a weekend to mutual friends who live in Madrid. A weekend consisting of shopping, eating, drinking, and more shopping, eating, and drinking, and recovering at the kitchen table. We have so much fun and have such great conversations. We always end Sunday at the same restaurant, where you have lunch at a large round table from 2 to 6. This comes pretty close to an ideal weekend.”
Imagine you can give people a tip on what to watch, read, or listen to this weekend. What would it be?
‘If you haven't been to Matisse at the Stedelijk yet, go, before the exhibition closes on August 16. So beautiful! And further just enjoy the sun. With a book. I read Schitterende Ruines by Jess Walter this vacation. Really a beautiful summer book.”
And then back to reality. The alarm clock, what time does it ring again on Monday morning?
“Quarter to 7. I am a morning person, so I usually have no problem with it. If all goes well, I will first do some sports, go for a run, do a bit on the rowing machine, and then dive into the hustle and bustle of the day.”
