Amayzine

Jetske Ultee is a research physician in cosmetic dermatology with her own blog. Through dr-jetskeultee.nl she keeps us informed about what we should and shouldn't do in the field of skincare. And we can tell you one thing: here at Amayzine, we are huge fans of Jetske, so we want to know everything about her. Are you joining us?

Hi Jetske, how nice that you want to be with us in the TGIF today. How was your week?

The week started with a visit with my two girls to Abercrombie & Fitch in Düsseldorf. In a weak moment, I promised them to go shopping here during the summer vacation. Since a promise makes debt, after sitting in the car for two hours, I spent the rest of the day with them in a darkened store where you almost had to take numbers for the fitting rooms... The rest of this week was all about preparations and recordings for the Tros Radar program. I talk more about shampoos and the usefulness of specific ingredients.

You have a blog about skincare, namely dr-jetskeultee.nl. Is that something you have wanted to do for a long time or did it suddenly come your way?

Sounds strange, but my first project in grade 7 was about Helena Rubinstein! It grabbed me back then and never let go. How nice is it to be able to do what you've always dreamed of?

Besides your blog, you are also a research physician in cosmetic dermatology, you have your own product line, and you have founded your own foundation. How do you combine all this?

Every morning, while the whole house is still in deep rest, I sit behind my desk at 6:00 AM. That works very well for me. And luckily, I have a team of 12 amazing people who ensure that the number of forgotten appointments, missed parent evenings, and far too short nights remains somewhat manageable.

Sounds like you've already achieved all your goals. Or is there secretly something else?

The moment you have achieved all your goals, you should start worrying, in my opinion. Outside of skincare, my other passion is traveling, and two years ago we made a world trip with our children. I couldn't help but learn more about the plant-based ingredients and oils that locals use for skincare at every new place we visited. I am convinced that there is a lot of knowledge that we do nothing with, and I would love to write a book about that. Of course, I still need to make some trips first...

It's already Friday! How are you welcoming the weekend today?

This weekend, we are welcoming it with a bottle of wine on the beach! Just a quick blow on the beach in Bergen aan Zee before school starts again next week...

You are a mother of four children. Do you have any time left for yourself on the weekend?

It's funny that everyone thinks you are very busy with four children. Although I like to keep everyone in that illusion, I must admit that having four kids is peanuts after the first tough years. They keep each other busy and have been used from a young age to do things themselves if they want something quickly. Mothers with one or two children really have it tough! The only exception is Saturday morning when everyone has to play hockey, and it's always in the farthest corners of the country...

I just recently moved to Amsterdam, so I am discovering De Baarsjes a lot. I love to eat at Edel and Radijs. Oh yes, and a visit to the cat café Kopjes is also at the top of my list.

My favorite weekend hotspot is my own kitchen at home in Oosterbeek. During the week, I am out so much that I enjoy being home and cooking for my family and friends on the weekend. If I can break away from my house, I like to have lunch at café Verheyden in Arnhem, and on a nice evening, there is no better place than the terrace of The Hunting Lodge at Rosendael Castle. I prefer to shop online, so you won't find me quickly in a shopping street on Saturday.

Do you have guilty pleasures that manifest on the weekend?

Saturday doesn't have much “me-time” due to all the family's sports activities, but I make up for it on Sunday. Sleeping in, enjoying breakfast, a bit of running, reading, and if it rains, I'm secretly really happy. I can spend the afternoon surfing without guilt. First, a bit of virtual traveling on sites like Jetsetter, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and Tablet Hotels, pinning on Pinterest in between, and then ending the afternoon shopping at Vestiaire Collective, MyTheresa, and The Outnet. And then I do tell the kids that they can only use the iPad at 5:00 PM!

We think it would be nice to end the interview with a skincare tip. So tell us, what must we know, do, apply?

What I can recommend to everyone is the use of an exfoliant, and I don't mean a scrub with those hard granules but a skincare product with glycolic acid or salicylic acid. This dissolves dead skin flakes that make your skin dull and cause pimples like snow melting in the sun, and your skin will start to glow again. If you are over 30, look kindly at your doctor and ask him for a prescription for vitamin A acid cream. This is the only product that has been proven to have skin-rejuvenating effects.
