Today, the handsome Oscar Aerts is in our Thank God it’s Friday. Because besides playing Vincent in GTST, he is participating in Expeditie Robinson this year, and that’s why we wanted to ask him everything. Literally and figuratively, you understand. Curious about what he thought of his Expeditie adventure? Then read on.
As an Expeditie Robinson participant, you can’t reveal too much yet, but we are very curious about your adventure. What can you tell us?
I obviously have to keep everything secret, otherwise I’ll get a huge fine, but it was really a bizarre adventure. I had never followed it on television, and when I was approached, I thought: “Okay. Let me just watch a season back.”
Why did you say “yes” to Expeditie Robinson? And did you have to think about it for a long time?
Watching a season back was necessary to let it sink in or something. After that, I knew exactly what it entailed, and especially when I saw the games, I thought: yes, I’m going to do this. I’m quite sporty and would almost pay to do those games. Especially on such a beautiful island. I had never been outside of Europe, and there I was suddenly, in the Philippines.
What did you miss the most when you were on Robinson Island?
I think just my home. My girlfriend, friends, family. But also the control over my own life. In Amsterdam, I can just do what I want. If I don’t feel like doing something, I just go home, for example. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case now.
What did you find the hardest during your participation?
Of course, I’ve been away from home for work for longer, but then I have a phone with me and can FaceTime, for example. Now I didn’t have that, and you have zero contact with the outside world. I couldn’t even let anyone know that I had landed. Everyone is used to being constantly connected, so since that wasn’t the case, it was definitely an adjustment and difficult. Somewhere it was also really nice to live without a phone, though.
You play Vincent in Goede Tijden, Slechte Tijden, so you can act. Did that help you during your participation in Robinson? And in what way?
You would think that as an actor you could take on a role and play tactically. For example, I could pretend to be very weak, but I actually just stayed myself. I found that a bit scary, by the way, because this was the first program I participated in, and normally I play a role. Now everyone got to know the real Oscar. And suppose people think I’m a jerk, then they really think I’m a jerk and not the role I play. So that made it quite exciting.
Now you are safely back on Dutch soil and the weekend is in sight. How do you kick it off?
On Friday, I kick off the weekend with a party for the 10th anniversary of Qmusic. I got to know Wietze during Expeditie, so it’s nice to see him again. On Saturday, I might go to a festival or participate in the football match in the RTL Star Team, and on Sunday, I think I’ll just go to the beach with my girlfriend if the weather is nice.
If practical matters like time and money didn’t matter, what would your perfect weekend look like?
Then I would say to my girlfriend: ‘Pack your suitcase, we’re going to Schiphol now and getting on the plane.’ That could be to a beautiful beach, the Maldives for example, but also to New York. I’ve never been there, and I really want to go there.
What are your guilty pleasures that come out during the weekend?
Ooh, tough question. I think I secretly really love sentimental songs. I never listen to them, but apparently, I sing them all day. I also don’t understand where it comes from, but I often hear from my girlfriend that she gets crazy from it, haha.
Last question: is there an alarm set for Monday? And for what?
Yes, there is definitely an alarm set for Monday. I have to rehearse for a performance I’m currently working on at 11:00 AM, but before that, I think I’ll go work out.
Expeditie Robinson can be seen every Thursday at 8:30 PM on RTL 5 starting September 3.
