This kitesurfer, who is also the face of Biotherm Homme, is at the top of our wishlist. His name is Youri Zoon and besides being good at kiting, he is also really nice, as we got to interview him. It's clear that Youri has a great life. Just look.
1. Hi Youri, how nice that we get to interview you for TGIF. You're very busy right now and we understand you're in Marseille for a shoot. What does an average week look like for you?
“No problem, really nice! That's correct. At the moment I'm on the plane back to the Netherlands. I had a shoot in Marseille for Biotherm. It was busy, but very successful. Normally, I get up at 7 am and answer some emails and possibly do an interview. Around 8:30 am I head to the gym for strength and conditioning training. Often afterwards – if there’s wind – kitesurf training and otherwise just relaxing at home. By the way, I’m totally fine with that, since I’m traveling most of the year anyway.”
2. And what if you're somewhere you want to kitesurf and there's absolutely no wind? What do you do then?
I often try to be a bit active. If there are waves, I go surfing, and if there's a cable nearby, I try to do some wakeboarding. Otherwise, cycling, running, or strength/conditioning training. If there’s no wind during a competition, I’m often still active, but not too intense. I have to save my energy for the competition, of course. And then also a bit of chilling: watching a movie, reading a bit, and especially – very important – enjoying.
3. How long did it take before you dared to call yourself a professional kitesurfer?
I started kitesurfing in 2003 and eventually participated in almost the entire world cup in 2006. In 2007, I received financial support from my sponsors and that’s when I actually became a full professional. So that’s already 8.5 years.
4. Most surfers are quite popular among women. Do you notice that too?
Yes, is that so? Haha. I have a girlfriend, so I pay less attention to that.
5. So, now about your weekend: how do you plan it this week?
That depends. I’m a real life enjoyer, so I prefer to do that with a BBQ and a beer. But during competitions, that’s unfortunately not possible, so then it’s early to bed. Boring, right?!
6. Maybe it’s a stereotype: but surfers do like to party here and there. Does that apply to you as well?
That’s a bit of a generalization, but I definitely enjoy a party! I think you should do that every now and then anyway. Enjoying life is the most important thing there is. Besides, I always keep competitions in mind.
7. Does your weekend revolve around kitesurfing or do you have other things on your agenda?
If there’s wind, I’m going kitesurfing this weekend. Otherwise, I’ll do other fun things.
8. What’s your favorite music to listen to on the weekend?
The song I really like right now is El Perdón by Nicky Jam, so that’s a nice track for the weekend.
9. Last question: What does your ideal Sunday look like? Anything goes and money doesn’t exist!
Super yachts, fast cars, and a private jet and of course a lot of fun. Or would that be Saturday? No, seriously, just enjoying a bite and a drink with friends and family. That makes me incredibly happy!
