One wants to dive or really wants to paraglide from a giant mountain. My bucket list mainly consists of dining at a certain restaurant. The Jane, for example. Restaurant Noma in Copenhagen is also still at the top of my list, and the three-star establishment Mugaritz in San Sebastian as well. Maybe I should start doing a little less shopping at Net-A-Porter and set aside some money each month for these dreams. Otherwise, nothing will ever come of it.
May emailed me this week with a link from HarperBazaar.com featuring 10 restaurants in the world that you absolutely must visit. My bucket list has thus become even longer, which means a year without buying new clothes... I'll mention five.
Sukiyabashi Jiro, Tokyo
It is said to be the best sushi restaurant in the world, and since I am quite a sushi fan, I really want to go here. And I also want to see Tokyo someday, since I’ll be there anyway. Making a reservation is impossible; you need to know someone who can put you “on the list” through connections. I'm going to investigate.
Chef Jiro Ono is also featured in the fantastic documentary ‘Jiro Dreams of Sushi’. You really have to see it. It feels like you've been there a little bit.
Al Mahara Restaurant in the Burj Al Arab
of Jumeirah Resorts, Dubai
As if you are in an aquarium. From your feet to the ceiling, everything is made of glass, and the most beautiful fish swim past your nose. What do you eat there? Fruits de mer.
L’ami Jean, Paris
A real Parisian bistro where you sit among the coolest and best-dressed people. It’s small, so make a reservation a few months in advance. So small that you can hear the chef shouting. I find that nice.
Ekstedt, Stockholm
No stove is used here. The chefs work with fire pits and wood ovens. They want to go back in time. The menu is full of words you've never heard of, so I hope you like surprises.
Sketch, London
Maybe it’s a shame that I’ve never been there, but this is definitely high on the bucket list of restaurants you must visit. The interior of the restaurant is very Instagrammable. It looks like a pastel pink fairy tale land, while another dining area looks like an enchanted forest. The restrooms are the coolest restrooms in the world, according to Harper’s Bazaar. The stalls are gigantic eggs, and the ceiling is made up of all different colors. Well, you really have to go here.
