5X EXERCISING WITHOUT HAVING TO GO TO THE GYM

Gyms. Especially here in Amsterdam, you are bombarded with them. On almost every street corner, there is a boxing school, yoga center, or fitness club, and if there isn't one, you won't have to look long. However, not everyone feels like a fish in water among the muscle-bound or flexible yoga enthusiasts. Don't feel like paying for an expensive gym membership and sweating it out with the weightlifters to lose those extra pounds? No worries, nowadays you can get quite far with your own phone.

Workout apps. Do they work? And which app gets you in shape the best? I looked it up for you.

1. Nike Training Club

You can exercise in an accessible way with this app from Nike. You choose your goal, and your workout is then adjusted accordingly. During the workout, you receive instructions from a trainer while doing the exercises to your favorite music. You keep track of your progress yourself and can also share it via social media.

2. CARROT Fit

Exercising with the help of CARROT Fit is never boring again. But: you have to be able to handle a bit of criticism. This sadistic digital trainer ensures that you at least get moving for seven minutes every day; just at home in the living room. If you skip a day, you'll hear about it too. CARROT Fit is not exactly gentle. ‘Lose weight, fatty!’ The app works with HealthKit, so your weight and activities are synchronized with the Health app. CARROT Fit can also read data from other sports apps and comment on it. So, stay away from your candy stash when using this app, because CARROT Fit knows everything and will make its presence known.

“No worries, nowadays you can get quite far with your own phone.”

3. Strava

One of the best apps for the enthusiastic outdoor sports enthusiasts among us is Strava. Whether you want to beat your own time or look at other enthusiasts near you, Strava gets the competition going well. Want to keep challenging yourself outdoors? Then this is the perfect app for you. When you use your iPhone's location data, your route will be mapped out and your pace will be tracked. The app also estimates the number of calories burned and records the total distance covered, elevation gain, total time, speed over distance, average speed, maximum speed, and your heart rate if you wear a compatible heart rate monitor. If competition isn't your thing and you prefer to keep your activities private, then at least don't waste time on Strava.

4. Pocket Yoga

Super handy for the yoga lovers among us: Pocket Yoga. From now on, you don't have to leave the house, because that yoga party can just happen in your living room. The app offers you 27 different sessions where each pose is explained and its purpose is described. Very nice: the app also keeps track of how many calories you burn.

5. Fitway abdominal trainer

Do you have a few minutes to spare? With this simple yet effective workout app, you can train your core. Training your abdominal muscles has never been easier. You don't need any equipment; all exercises can be done at home with the help of short workout videos. No more excuses.
