6 trends that we leave behind
(AND 6 NEW ONES THAT WE EMBRACE)
A new year means new rules, so in the name of fashion, I ask you to take a critical look in your closet and say goodbye to the following items.
The culotte
We tried, really. Our men were horrified by it and we actually only found it really nice on ultra-slim and extremely tall women. And then also combined with the most expensive pump and an oversized Céline coat. Then it just worked. So unfortunately, culotte, time to go...
Bells-and-whistles-ear
I admit, it was lovely that there was a bit more happening around the ear than those eternal matching earrings, but now the Swami-bami Indian earring chain trend is over again, don’t you think? Ultimately, it didn’t really suit us either. Now choose a large statement piece or vary with your earrings and don’t make it too matchy-matchy. And you’re not still telling me you only have one hole in each ear, are you? dan die eeuwige matching oorbelletjes, maar nu is de Swami-bami Indiase oorkettingtrend wel weer voorbij, vind je niet?
Goodbye, sea of flowers
We saw a lot of floral prints zooming in on the flower itself. Flowers are still a theme, but now it’s more in a botanical form where you can also see the stems and leaves, and sometimes (as they did so nicely at Topshop) even a little bunny peeks through the stems.
The marine stripe...
It’s a classic that Coco Chanel has given us and of course this stripe will always remain in fashion. Yet many designers have given the ‘marinière’ a new look and now you see more of the beach chair stripe where the stripe is wider, two different colors are used (other than just blue and white), and where the stripe is sometimes horizontal and then vertical. A cheerful sailor in short in 2016.
Or-or becomes and-and
In the past (a few months ago is incredibly long ago in fashion land) you wore either an earring or a necklace. And earring, necklace, and glasses were absolutely too much of a good thing. But times have changed. Just look at the Gucci collection again. The word ‘too’ doesn’t exist. Both glasses, earrings, a beret, and a big bow around your neck. We’ll save the words ‘too much’ for another fashion era.
Say goodbye to your pump
I’m exaggerating, under jeans (and especially under a baggy boyfriend) your pumps are very welcome. Under a dress (and especially under the lingerie-like dress that is now coming into fashion) a pump is a no-go. Too old-fashioned, too prim, too little bite. Combine that dress with a rougher shoe. For example, a short cowboy boot that reaches your ankle or a ballerina.
