6 X WHY RENTING A BOAT IS A GREAT IDEA

It's autumn break, at least in our region, and I must say that I find the autumn break the dullest of all vacations.

Your credit card is still recovering from your Ibiza escapades and if you're being completely honest, you're not really ready for a week of lying down with a Strawberry Daiquiri in your left hand and a fresh JAN in your right.

But if you have kids, you still want to fill their days. To avoid spending my days in the tropical swimming paradise or the indoor playground in Noordwijkerhout (for me the equivalent of hell), I came up with a plan. We rented a boat. For an adventure. And after a day and a night, I can highly recommend it.

1. Where the wind takes you

You don't have to be back at a certain time or arrange a taxi. You sail in your little house and if you like it somewhere, you stay there. So here I am now in Eernewoude. No idea where it is exactly, but it's cozy and there's a playground that I can keep an eye on from our back deck.

2. You appreciate your own bed again

Because no matter how luxurious your yacht is, the beds are smaller and creakier than at home. I woke up seventeen times last night, but each time I thought; look at us lying here. How cozy.

3. Good reason for pancakes

You can't conjure up an exquisite meal on a little boat. Not that I would do that otherwise, but still. Pancakes are a brilliant idea after a day on the water. I had forgotten how delicious they were.

“Each time I thought; look at us lying here. How cozy.”

4. Friesland

The Frisian waters are Venice in Dutch style. Houses by the water, restaurants with docks instead of parking spaces. It's so relaxing.

5. Wifi everywhere

Every harbor I've been to so far had nice free wifi. An average five-star hotel could learn a thing or two from that.

6. With your feet on the ground

Showering with a coin (okay, we also have a shower on board, but I don't have much faith in it), setting up your bed in the evening, securing everything for the sea, and walking in flat shoes, that doesn't happen to me often.

And during the autumn break, those boats cost almost nothing. See you in Sneek?
