9 funny sleep facts

Sleeping is incredibly important. People who can function well on just four hours of sleep per night will eventually notice it. Tired, sluggish, irritable, and it can even get to the point where you can't get out of bed anymore. And you don't want that. On average, a person needs 6.5 hours of sleep per night to feel reasonably well-rested. And there are even more fun facts about sleep that I think you should know.

  • Getting enough sleep keeps you slim. Lack of sleep leads to a disrupted metabolism. The idea that sleeping makes you slim is not even that strange.
  • Even if you sleep little, it affects your memory. You become forgetful, maybe a bit hazy or not completely present mentally. The more often you sleep poorly and little, the more these kinds of symptoms can occur.
  • A smoothie with milk and banana helps. Make that if you're having trouble falling asleep. A high-ranking official from Australia has researched it, you could believe him.
  • Counting sheep apparently doesn't help at all. You'd better put on some music where you can hear flowing water. Then you're immediately in dreamland. Maybe going to the bathroom first is not a bad idea.
  • Sleeping in is not that super healthy. Too much sleep can actually make you very tired. Aim for between 6.5 and 8 hours of sleep.
  • The world record for ‘staying awake the longest’ is 18 days, 21 hours, and 40 minutes. After that, the man began to hallucinate, experienced paranoia, started seeing things, and his memory stopped working. Okeeee.
  • During sleep, we turn over on average every ten minutes. That amounts to about forty times a night. Tossing and turning in bed is necessary, as sleep experts say it's needed for our blood circulation. If you lie still on your back all night without turning over, you'll wake up the next morning as stiff as a board and not well-rested at all.
  • Most dreams last about 20 minutes.
  • The ideal temperature for sleeping is 20 degrees. Preferably with a window open if possible. Fresh air, please.
