MISS UNIVERSE

GOES COMPLETELY WRONG

The whole phenomenon of the beauty pageant is something that doesn't really resonate in our country. We do have a beauty pageant, but in my opinion, it's something we all secretly laugh about instead of taking it very seriously. At least, I secretly laugh about it and don't take it seriously at all. Anyway, the winners from all countries also get to compete against each other for the title of Miss Universe, and that is taken seriously by many.

The awarding of that is a grand spectacle with many bleached smiles, tanned skin, and hysterical glitter dresses. I must say, I absolutely love it and can watch YouTube videos of ladies who are mumbling about world peace and doing their utmost to appear as intelligent as possible while answering politically colored questions for longer than is good for me. Delightful.

Last December, the big sparkling crown was awarded again, but this time the elections were better than EVER. I still watch the videos back and have to chuckle out loud because it has never been so awkward – something went completely wrong.

Tears, more tears, a lot of ‘oh my gosh’, confetti in the air, everyone clapping and laughing and oooh, what a beautiful moment.

Steve Harvey, an American actor and stand-up comedian, did the awarding, and Miss Colombia and Miss Philippines were the last two, so one of them became Miss Universe. As the lights dim and that delicious exaggerated tension is created, Harvey roars into his microphone, ‘AND THE WINNER IS: MISS COLOMBIA.’ Tears, more tears, a lot of ‘oh my gosh’, confetti in the air, everyone clapping and laughing and oooh, what a beautiful moment.

But watch out: HE READ THE CARD WRONG. While Miss Philippines walks away and Miss Colombia takes her lap to receive all the applause and gets crowned, Harvey and the organization realize that it has all gone wrong. Not Colombia, but Philippines was the winner.

I mean, like Oh My God.

Miss Philippines is of course completely in shock, and just think about the fact that Miss Colombia then has to take off that crown, give it to someone else, after waving and waving to the audience and the cameras for 4 minutes. Really, it doesn't get more embarrassing than this. Internally, this must have caused a huge flood of misery, but I can tell them: from now on, I will watch every year so I never have to miss this kind of thing again.
