CAROLIen’S FAST LANE LIFE

Yes, another fresh weekly diary from our Carolien. Because you know: she never sits still.

1. Skiing used to be a regular thing at our home during the spring break. In such a wonderfully brightly colored suit, skiing down the mountains of Austria in a class, and as a reward, our ski instructor would sneak us a gummy bear. Now, 16 years later, I was quite curious if I could stand for more than a minute... A good start is half the battle, so with a killer ski outfit, I thought it couldn't go wrong! It's quite strange that in ten years I have never been on a winter sports trip with Jon. Whenever we can get away for a few days, we always choose the sun right away. And now I immediately remembered why: nine layers of thermals, thick mittens, big hats, and still, after four descents, I had ice blocks for feet. But without falling even once!

2. From Switzerland, we immediately traveled to Paris: our good friend Esther Louise Dorhout Mees showcased her latest couture collection for the first time at Paris Fashion Week! We were so proud: before the show, we briefly went backstage, and I have never seen such an organized chaos. Models getting the last touch-up, photographers running around in all directions, journalists trying to catch a glimpse of the collection: Jon and I sat there breathlessly staring. In the beautiful Maison de L’architecture, the audience pushed their way inside, with even some being turned away because it was simply too full. The show was spectacular, and I melted for the handwoven fabrics and self-designed prints on silk. My wardrobe for all upcoming premieres is now complete in one go!

3. It felt like a huge déjà-vu: a week ago, I was celebrating my bachelorette with my best girlfriends in the heart of Paris. Now I had time to stroll through the beautiful Le Bon Marché to admire all the stunning design collections (just looking, right...). To my great surprise, there was an exhibition going on about the beautiful creations of interior and fashion designer Iris Apfel. A while ago, I had seen her documentary on Netflix, and I was completely captivated by this woman: the way she creates and combines styles is incredibly inspiring. This creation was my absolute favorite: my new quest is to find such a fantastic colored lammy coat.

4. Jon finds it awful: a men's shoe for women. Yet I have quite a selection of these in my closet: they are wonderfully comfortable and can be perfectly combined with both jeans and an A-line skirt. My favorite pair is these beauties from Chanel that I snagged at a real estate sale in LA: I literally jumped for joy when I found them in exactly my size! The brand G.H. Bass & Co. has been making these signature ‘Weejuns’ men shoes for years, and despite my husband, I couldn't resist ordering this pair. They fit like slippers, and when I wear them, it feels a bit like an ode to ‘The King of Pop’. Hopefully, I can convert Jon someday...

5. On vacation, Jon and I play Yathzee with five rows at once (whoever loses gets the title ‘Loser of the vacation’ pinned on them, so there’s quite a lot at stake) and at parties, ‘Who’s the Man’ is always played: I love games! The only downside: I am MEGA competitive, which can sometimes be quite annoying for my opponents... When this game was introduced at our home yesterday, I went completely crazy: ‘Cards against humanity’. The bizarre title already says quite a lot, I can tell you. In turns, you read a black card with a question on it, and the rest of the players have to finish that sentence by choosing a white card and laying it down. The white cards have the most bizarre answers, resulting in hilarious sentences. Believe me, with a glass of wine, this game is guaranteed to lead to at least three fits of laughter.
