GIGI AND MAY
Part III
So there is seriously something going on between Gigi and me. As you here may have read, we already had a thing during New York Fashion Week. First there was the press conference where Elke and I bonded with Gigi as Dutchies. Then there was the high five during the finale of the show and we capped off our friendship with a tête-à-tête in Milan where we met each other (and reminisced, for example about the historic high five: “Was that you???”) in the Max Mara store.
So far Gigi and May. At least, that’s what I thought. Until I tried to work quietly on Friday at the Conservatorium Hotel in Amsterdam. Daniëlle (my sales director) and I claimed two armchairs in the hotel’s large hall with ginger tea on the left and laptops on our laps. “Daan, there’s an incredible somebody on the terrace. I can tell by everything.”
Because I have a radar for ‘somebodies’. They always try to be incredibly inconspicuous and they really go off the rails with that. And a cap on and sunglasses (even when the sun is definitely not shining) is a hard indicator of an A-list celebrity.

I saw that. And a cap, and glasses, an exceptionally long and slim body and an energy that A-listers tend to have. Something you can’t name, well, let’s call it the magic that real stars have. I saw all of that.
So when she walked in, we immediately zoomed in on this woman. “Daan, I think it’s Gigi.” “Yes, May, it’s Gigi. What should we do now?”
It wasn’t just Gigi, but it was also Yolanda (and oh, I prayed so that she read this post hadn’t read this. Yolanda, I didn’t mean it that badly) and Bella, their Rotterdam grandmother (in a trendy tiger coat) and niece.
Should we stalk? Were we going for the ussie? Did we act like it was all the most normal thing in the world and we weren’t fazed by one more or less celebrity? There was a lot of discussion on the Amayzine app when we decided to just, as mature as we sometimes are, walk up to the table and say hi to Gigi. With a little tail between our legs because oh dear, what if Yolanda has read this piece… Gigi liked it. “So good to see you!” and introduced us to her dearest Rotterdam grandmother. By the way, Yolanda looked particularly good and nice in a black comfortable suit with white sneakers. We left the ussie as it was. Gigi and I are now beyond that stage. #nextlevelfriendship
