Fun & Famous
IT IS A CRIME THAT THESE GIRL BANDS ARE NO LONGER TOGETHER
I don't know if it's because of the new SBS program, but suddenly I'm totally into girl bands again. In the ’90s, that was really a thing. My sister and I walked down the street in Spice Girl outfits, with platform soles, colored hair ties, ponytails: everything. It couldn't get any crazier. Singing groups set the tone. Made the trends. Now it seems like top models and loud reality stars are doing that instead. What happened?
Since a little drop of nostalgia is always nice (especially on the weekend), I present the absolute best boy and girl bands that it's a shame for humanity that they stopped. Due to solo ambitions (which always flopped afterwards), jealousy, boredom, whatever the reason may be. It's eternally a pity. These were my childhood favorites:
Sugababes
I didn't even see this as a girl band actually. The Sugababes, and I'm talking about the old lineup with Keisha, Mutya, and Heidi, were my life. My budding singing career in the shower. Seriously, how cool were these chicks? A bit of a shame that the girl group evolved more often than an average Pokémon. The ‘new’ girls who replaced them? A bit meh. Luckily, we still have the footage.
Girls Aloud
I'm actually curious if people still know these. Girls Aloud was a British pop group that originated from the talent show Popstars – The Rivals. They started releasing hits in 2002, but in 2013 the plug was pulled. And again, their first hits were the best. Because of this clip, I also wanted to be in a girl band.
Atomic Kitten
“The tide is high, but I’m holding on. I’m gonna be your nuuuumber one.” I was so in love with this song. This fun girl trio (and no, they weren't sisters, I always thought that) existed between 1997 and 2008. And what do I read now? Been working on a comeback since 2012? Whut? There is still HOPE!
The Black Eyed Peas
Okay okay, a little exception for the girl bands, we have a mixed group among us when we talk about this group of American hip hop/house artists. No matter how much success will.i.am and Fergie may have had solo, the magical songs they made with The Black Eyed Peas are forever a thing of the past. Let's just have a nostalgic moment with this (still) beautiful song.
The Pussycat Dolls
And last but not least: our kitty friends. It all started with an arrogant song where you sang that you were much prettier, sexier, and more exciting than his current girlfriend. After that, the Dolls became a hit machine. I still think the coolest music video is When I Grow Up. When I still thought I would ‘just’ become a superstar. Duh. Really really a shame that lead singer Nicole thought she could do it solo.
