KOMBUCHA

A bit of a health addict (and you all are, right?) drinks Kombucha these days. At least, that's what I would think. However, only Simone in the editorial team had heard of this wonder drink. Anyway, Kombucha is fermented tea. Not necessarily tasty, but very healthy. And who came up with this? That's right, the Chinese. They call this shizzle an elixir of eternal youth. And for the following reasons:

Detox

Kombucha contains various acids that have a purifying effect on the liver. And as you know, the liver has quite a hard time with our Western lifestyle of lots of fat and alcohol.

Digestion

Because there are as many as four different probiotic strains present in Kombucha (sometimes even more), your intestines benefit enormously. It will help you digest your food better, and if you have issues with candida, it's definitely worth trying this wonder drink.

More energy

There are several explanations for why you get more energy from Kombucha. First of all, due to the presence of iron, a small amount of caffeine, and vitamin B. But Kombucha also seems to increase the oxygen level in your blood.

“They call this shizzle an elixir of eternal youth.”

Immune system boosting

Various antioxidants prevent damage to your cells and have anti-inflammatory effects.

Joint damage

Not only will your joints be happy, but your skin will too! Kombucha contains glucosamine, which stimulates the production of hyaluronic acid. And you want that stuff for smooth skin and joints.

Weight loss

As if you weren't already convinced that you should be on Kombucha, it's also good for your figure! That's because it contains a type of acid similar to apple cider. And that supposedly boosts fat burning.

Okay, peeps, now that you're convinced (right?) of the beneficial effects, here's some info on how to get this stuff. To start, you can make it yourself. Now, I have of course tried this myself because it seemed amazing to have an eternal source of this eternal youth elixir. The website manivivendi.nl sells home-brewed Kombucha, but also the mushroom you need to make Kombucha yourself. The making process is quite simple. You brew tea, sweeten it with the right amount of sugar, let the mixture cool to room temperature, and add the mushroom. What follows is a true wonder of biology. First, a film forms on the surface of the liquid, and then there comes rapapapa… a new mushroom! After about ten days, you need to test every day whether the Kombucha is to your taste: not too sweet and not too sour. And then you can start drinking it. A glass every day.

I must honestly say that my homemade Kombucha was quite nasty. But since I had grown a beautiful new mushroom, I kept brewing because hey, it really does have something. A tastier alternative is the Kombucha from Karma, which they sell at Organic food for You and Ekoplaza. This contains a bit more sugar and other additions like hibiscus and one of my favorites: turmeric.

I really recommend you try Kombucha. It's an easy way to give your health a boost. Cheerio!
