MARIE-CLAIRE IN MALIBU

Spring break has just begun here and after our New Orleans adventure it was time for a road trip. We rented a camper and set off for Big Sur. Now camping is not really my thing, you should know. And sleeping in a tent or camper even less so. In the middle of the night I wake up thinking I'm lying in a coffin. It takes a moment, but then I know where I am. Gasping and panting with a heart rate of 180. The whole family is awake. ‘Nothing to worry about, go back to sleep.’ But in this case, it's not a problem at all. We're going to Big Sur... Where nature is truly at its best. Rugged rocks with white-capped waves. Dense forests with redwood trees, waterfalls, and romantic pine trees. It's spring, so everything is in bloom.

In the morning we drive along the narrow mountain pass of Highway 1. Beautiful, each turn more stunning than the last. You want to stop everywhere to take photos. And there is no fog, but a crystal clear blue sky. That can sometimes be different here. Fog, also beautiful, because then you drive through the set of David Lynch's Twin Peaks.

Big Sur is really ‘something else’. It is a wooded area along the rocky coast of California. Impossible to sum up in one sentence. You can stay in a five-star hotel and dine in a lounge with a view of the rocky coast. Or in my favorite: a treehouse in the middle of the forest by the coast, but unfortunately for 18+, so not suitable for children. Or in a camper at an RV camping site with a breathtaking view and all the peace and nature around you. And kids who are having a great time.

Gasping and panting with a heart rate of 180. The whole family is awake.

I had been looking forward to a fresh and softly made hotel bed and a lovely glass of local white wine in a glass. But the euphoria of connecting water and electricity and cooking a delicious meal for the family is also quite satisfying. We toast to that, in our folding chairs with a glass of wine in a plastic cup. But with a truly beautiful view. Big Sur.
