MARION'S CHRISTMAS BOOK TIPS
Fireplace on, nice music playing, spicy drink on the side, and then a good book. Since I am the self-proclaimed intellectual of the editorial team (ahem), I have made a nice list for you of the most beautiful Christmas books.
Judas – Astrid Holleeder
Your friend has probably already received this book from Sinterklaas, so you don't even have to buy it yourself. And you have probably already read it, but if that's not the case, do it now. This book is delicious. Not only is the subject juicier than juicy, but it also turns out that Astrid is a lovely writer. What’s also handy: finally conversation material with your father-in-law (because he has read it too) at the Christmas dinner!
Hand lettering made easy! – Karin Luttenberg
What a superwoman you would have been if you had sent all your loved ones hand-lettered cards this year! Too bad, but unfortunately. Luckily, Christmas is also the holiday of forgiveness and you can already start this vacation with ab-so-lute perfection for next year. Tap into your inner Martha Stewart and go wild with this book. By the way, if your fine motor skills are as impaired as mine, it will never work out. But still fun to give it a try.
The First Woman – Susan Smit
Amazing page-turner from my bestie Smit. But that's not the reason why you should read this book, although you can weigh that in. This is really one of those books you can completely drown in. A delightful love story between Hollywood movie stars at the beginning of the last century. After I finished it, I still felt nostalgic for days about Lou and Geraldine, the main characters.
Are we smart enough to know how smart animals are? – Frans de Waal
Yes, we humans think we have it all figured out. But actually, elephants do. Because we think we are so smart because we can read a book and that elephant cannot. But an elephant has no need to read a book. So yes. Who is really smart here? More eye-openers like this can be found in this entertaining book.
As if it's over – Julian Barnes
And then another classic. This book was published in 2012 and deserves to be read nonetheless. Beautiful sentences, deep reflections, and then still an unexpected twist in the plot. It's one of those books you want to read again immediately after finishing it. Just because it's so beautiful.
The Nest – Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney
Christmas can often bring about family dramas. Or at least, dramas peak at Christmas. I haven't read this book yet, but I ordered it because the storyline intrigues me immensely. After years of underlying tensions in the family, the charismatic brother Leo returns from a rehab clinic. I love it already. This book is a New York Times bestseller, so it’s usually pretty good.
