These are the girls Kim and Lauren from Life of Pie Amsterdam. They make the tastiest, weirdest, biggest and sweetest cakes in the city. You can choose from vanilla, chocolate, red velvet or carrot. You might think: well, not necessarily special, but they always go all out with the toppings. The craziest stuff: from KitKats, vodka bottles, Smarties, M&M’s, plastic animals, money notes and mini cupcakes; think of it and they will execute it. You will definitely steal the show at a birthday party and the cake is also very instagrammable. I assume that snacking is no longer the guilty pleasure of these ladies, since they are busy with sweets all day. But what are those then?
What is your most used excuse?
‘In today's time, all that sugar is of course a no-go. Sometimes people ask if it can be sugar-free, and yes, anything is possible, but we don’t find it tasty ourselves. So the excuse ‘No, no sugar’ unfortunately doesn’t work… But let’s be honest: no one has ever died from a bite of sugar. Once a year should be fine, we think!’
Which movie, TV show or series makes you cry every time?
‘I have to honestly say that we don’t really have that much trouble with it. However, we are really sensitive to people who are struggling and then get helped by someone. Or for old people who still get to fulfill their dream. Then the tears roll down our cheeks. But also with Babe the mini pig: crying.’
What candy is your guilty pleasure?
Lauren: ‘Salmiak tongues!!! From Hema. OMG.’
What bad music can you secretly enjoy?
‘We only listen to really bad pop music in the Bakery. Once we have a song we can really go wild on, you’ll hear it blaring a hundred times in a row (sorry, neighbors)…’
What is your secret hobby?
‘We are both really good at lounging in bed. Sometimes we just lie in bed together for two days watching trashy series. Shawarma and pizza in bed is also no problem for us. Often our men find that a bit less.’
And your strangest trait?
Lauren: ‘Kim has an obsession with hygienic wipes. You find them in the car, in her bag, in the Bakery: everywhere, really. And those little bags from Robijn, those scented things. She even has them in her pocket.’
Do you have a compulsion?
Kim: ‘Lists, lists, lists… And Lauren has a kind of urge to put everything in small Chinese takeout boxes. Those boxes in which you normally get your food delivered.’
What would people really not expect from you?
‘I think people often think: the Bakery, it’s pink, poppy and cute. But actually, we are quite two tough chicks. We don’t go outside in our pink aprons. No, more jeans, Dr. Martens and preferably a really trashy sweater.’
What is your biggest pointless irritation?
‘I have to honestly say that we don’t have that quickly. The only thing is that we sometimes have really bad wifi in the Bakery. We think: YOU ARE WIFI, SO DO IT AS WIFI. THAT'S WHAT YOU'RE MADE FOR!’
And in terms of food? What do you secretly eat on the couch that you really shouldn’t be doing?
‘We actually eat everything that’s loose and tight. I think it’s important to let loose every now and then. We are much happier because of it. But of course, in moderation. By the way, you definitely won’t please us with a salad…’
What word do you actually use just a bit too often?
‘Haha, let’s keep that within the Bakery…’
And just for me, okay?
How often do you take a lick from the mixing bowl?
‘The batter is not our biggest challenge. But that half Jamin we have standing is really terrible!’
