STOP SAYING ‘IT'S FRIDAY AGAIN’

It's Friday. That means you probably have the weekend off tomorrow. And that today you'll see and read things everywhere on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram about “IT'S FRIDAY AGAIN” and “IT'S BACK AGAIN!” Every week again. And every time I feel a little sad about it.
The misery often starts on Wednesday. Then it sounds like “the week is halfway through” and “Friday is closer than Monday”. Millions of people watch the clock all Friday to see when it's 5:00 PM and they can close their computer. Weekend. Two days of weekend. Five days of work for two days of fun. Two days in which you have to relax and do fun things, but also boring things like visiting cobblers, grocery shopping, managing bank affairs, because you don't have time for that during the week. And of course, that's inevitable because, well, we all have to work, but maybe some people should scratch their heads and think about whether they're in the right place.
Because let's be honest, if you're really so intensely relieved on Friday that you finally don't have to work for two days, are you doing the right job? That's of course a hugely privileged and elitist thing to say, and I'm not even talking about the implied belief in the ability to create your own happiness. Not everyone is lucky enough to do something they enjoy; sometimes you just have to put bread on the table, and that sometimes means doing really boring jobs because there's simply no other solution.
But sometimes that's not the case either. Sometimes people just stay too long in a job they've had for a thousand years, without thinking about a possible next step. It's often attributed to my generation to think this way, the whole “I only do things I enjoy” idea, and it's often seen as negative. But I actually don't find that negative at all; I actually think that's very good. I myself have the terrible luck that I get to do what I enjoy every day. Then you indeed look forward to the weekend.
What I want to say is this. Find something that makes you happy, at least a little. Work your butt off to achieve and maintain that, and make sure you don't wait five days for those two days, but rather wait two days for those five days. And if that can't happen for whatever reason, make those five days a little more enjoyable. Don't set them off against the weekend so much; do something fun during the week too, try to live all seven days and not just on the weekend. Life is too short to waste your time.
