THE 8 IMPORTANT FASHION LESSONS THAT RENSKE LEARNED FROM THE MET GALA IN NEW YORK
The Met Gala is over again and wow, what a celebration it is to comment on all those outfits. Moreover, you can learn a lot from it, fashion- and trendwise. I have distilled 8 very important fashion lessons from it. I am certainly very pleased about it, but I am.
1. When I saw Dakota Johnson's dress, I knew: you really don't have to (necessarily) turn into a weird extraterrestrial being when the theme Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology is thrown at you. I learned: with a difficult theme, you just have to mix and match smartly. And keep it simple yet chic. Just look at Dakota's Gucci dress, with wonderful galaxy stars and a lovely flowy boho train. What a winner.
“Wearing something beautiful is step one, but you also have to be able to carry it”
2. Fancy party on the agenda? If you're really stressed about the dress, you might want to take a careful look at Sienna Miller. Don't let May read this, because she thought it was three times nothing, but um, can I say that I wouldn't say no to this sparkling dress?
3. A big diamond on your finger does EVERYTHING. Just look at the newly engaged Kate Upton. It rocks your outfit and makes everything chic, chicer, chicest. What a marriage can do to people, because Kate has had some rather ordinary moments in life. Maybe I want to get married too.
4. Gothic is not ugly. I mean: how cool are Léa Seydoux in Louis Vuitton and Chloë Sevigny in Simone Rocha?
5. Okay, that suit from Alexa Chung may be a bit conservative, but I WANT a pajama suit with deep cut-out, sequins, and a quasi nonchalantly tied cord around my waist. Sorry for existing.
6. It might be difficult, but I want to be Lily-Rose Depp at the Met Gala. THIS is how you wear haute couture Chanel. To start at the beginning: the craftsmanship of her outfit is really bizarrely good and refined. And I have never seen such an ultra-cool, fashionable, creative, and super luxurious bomber jacket. But the most important fashion lesson is that it all depends on your attitude and pose. In other words: wearing something beautiful is step one, but you also have to be able to carry it. It may sound a bit cringy, but it's just true.
7. The only man who gets away with iron pieces and Swarovski crystals on his upper arms is Iron Man Zayn Malik.
8. Laser cut is totally awesome and incredibly technological and everything, but only if you have Versace do it. And especially and ONLY if you have Kendall Jenner's body. I guess I have to return my cut-out suit tomorrow.
