8 X THE MOST BEAUTIFUL FOOD PHOTOS

It remains difficult to get a nice photo of a plate of pasta pesto or an omelet with zucchini without it looking like a mess. On my Instagram I post quite a few food photos, so I'm gradually getting the hang of it. Rule number 1 for me is: the plate must be arranged by a restaurant, because when I dive into the kitchen myself and think that grandma's cute little plate with meatballs looks very appetizing, I can't convey that in a photo at all. So I prefer to take photos when I go out to eat. There are also a few rules associated with that.

  • Light, light, light, and I mean natural light, of course. There are a lot of restaurants that are not Instagrammable (yes, I said that) and that is often due to too many spotlights in the ceiling. They simply don't provide nice light. Taking a photo of the food in the evening is therefore quite difficult, so do that preferably during the day and by a window.
  • Photograph from above. This is not necessarily a rule, but it is my preference.
  • Ensure minimal distractions. It should mainly be about the plate, which is why I find photos taken from above so nice. Ensure a calm background.
  • I understand that a hamburger or a club sandwich looks better from the side, but then make sure to have a calm background or work with focus.
  • Use as few filters as possible, because that doesn't make the food look any better.
  • The fewer items on the plate, the better.
  • Work with color in the food. Add a bit of green on the salmon and a bit of red fruit on your oatmeal.
  • Oh yes, don't forget to ALWAYS clean your lens before taking a photo.
