VOGUE VS HARPER’S BAZAAR
the battle
The March issues of the fashion magazines have landed on the doormat again. Start signal to sharpen the knives and dip the pens in ink for the biannual magazine battle.
Liesbeth is representing Harper’s Bazaar and I am Team Vogue. Ready, set, go.
Cover
Although Bazaar has a stunning cover, the points in this category go to Vogue. Even Liesbeth (the one from Bazaar) agrees. They have managed to get our favorite model Bette Franke, and this is the first time we see her in action again after she gave birth to her son Boris. Welcome back, Bette!
Number of pages
Harper’s Bazaar looked suspiciously thick and even towers over Vogue, but that mainly has to do with the beautifully matte and thick paper. Vogue has 284 pages and Bazaar ‘only’ 226. With beautiful paper, so that counts for something too. But purely on points, Vogue wins this section as well. Laughing.
Fashion series
After the September issue, the March issue is the most important edition, as it presents the fashion image for the upcoming season. As far as you haven't already absorbed that online and via Instagram. Anyway, this is the moment when fashion magazines showcase the most beautiful and the most fashion series. Bazaar has three, Vogue six. Vogue even has a series inspired by David Bowie. Must have been a stroke of luck, because you don't create such a series in a week, but it comes at a perfect moment. Vogue: dix points.
What makes us happy
Because look, on points Vogue is clearly winning (they also have 61 ads compared to 30 for Bazaar) but Bazaar does deliver an intensely beautifully made magazine. The art direction is masterful, the paper beautiful, and the ways in which visual themes are carried through is really impressive. An example of why magazines need to stay. At least if they are made as well as this one.
Vogue wins this battle, but if I may recommend you something… buy them both. For a tenner, you get kilos of inspiration that you will enjoy all season long.
