5 career lessons to take to heart
Barbie has had more than 150 jobs in 57 years. And not the least. Therefore today on International Day of the Girl: 5 career lessons to become what you want. We gathered the tips from Amayzine founder and editor-in-chief May-Britt Mobach because if anyone encourages girls to become what they want, it is her, and if anyone shows that your biggest dream can come true (she founded Amayzine.com in an attic room and just look where the editorial office is now), it is her as well. Here we go.
1. If you can dream it, you can become it
A good example when it comes to dreaming, daring, and doing is that of a school in Brooklyn. It is indeed in another country, but May-Britt strongly believes that you can learn from other cultures and how they adapt things in other countries. If you look at that, you can draw wise lessons from it and apply them in your own life. The children there come from underprivileged families but have a strong IQ. They are being prepared for a great future. On the lapel of their jacket, they wear a button with their name, their dream university, and the year they will graduate there. The fact that they dare to dream something makes the chance that it will eventually succeed much greater. Everything is possible for Barbie. Astronaut? Sure. Architect, why not? President? Of course.
2. Determine your talent
And also your passion. How do you find that exactly? It can help to ask others what you are good at. There are also a lot of tests that sometimes yield very surprising results that you hadn't thought of yourself or didn't know existed. But remember; usually, you are good at what you enjoy. To quote the Dalai Lama; find a job you love and you won't have to work a day in your life.
3. Changing jobs is good for you
According to PVDA politician Mei-Li Vos, women who are highly educated, work flexibly, and often change jobs are financially better off. Barbie has had 150 jobs, from dolphin trainer to astronaut and pastry chef, everything is fine as long as it makes you happy.
4. A network does a lot
Often you are already doing it unconsciously, but try to gather as many people around you from different disciplines as possible. It is most fun to be able to help each other forward. If you know a lot of people, there is always someone you can call for information or who might be able to arrange an important meeting for you. And of course, you like to do that back for others. Noblesse oblige, as the French say.
5. You can be anything
Did you know that daughters of mothers with a career get a better job and a better salary than daughters of housewives? A good example leads to good following. Moreover, you see that something is achievable. Why couldn't you become the director of a hospital? Why couldn't you become the female version of John de Mol? Why couldn't you become the first female prime minister of the Netherlands?. You can be anything. As long as you want to. And of course, you do your best.
