8 things you want to know about Meghan Markle

Phew, it's finally official. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are engaged.. She is a princess in the making. Unfortunately, this does mean the end of Rachel Zane and possibly the end of Suits as well? Patrick J. Adams has also kind of announced he is leaving. With Meghan as future royalty, I have a few facts for you that you probably didn't know about the future princess.

  1. She will not be known as Princess Meghan. That is a title you only get if you have blue blood. She will, like Kate, receive the title ‘Duchess’ once she is married to Harry, the ‘Duchess of Sussex‘ to be more exact, and people will also refer to her as ‘Her Royal Highness’.
  2. By the way, Meghan is not her real first name. Meghan was born as Rachel Meghan Markle, but chose to use her middle name for her acting career.
  3. She is not the first divorced woman to marry someone from the British royal family. Are you a fan of the hit series The Crown (season 2 is almost here by the way)? Then you know that King Edward VIII married Wallis Simpson in 1936, and it was a marriage that was not accepted and also led to his abdication as king.
  4. Meghan has been an advocate for gender equality since she was eleven and has also been an ambassador for United Nations Women for years.
  5. In English, Meghan is a ‘Ms’ and not a ‘Miss’. When Kate was engaged to Prince William, this was different. It is still unclear what the reason for the difference is, but it is thought that Kensington Palace did this because they preferred Meghan. Just in case you didn't know: ‘Miss’ is always used for ladies who are not married yet, and ‘Ms’ is actually a term that can be used whether you are married or not – it makes no distinction. ‘Mrs’ is what is used when you are married.
