8X SNEAKY CALORIES IN YOUR FAVORITE FOODS

calories

No guy waking me up on Sunday morning with coffee, warm rolls, and a thousand kisses. And that's why I pamper myself with breakfast in bed. My favorite breakfast is a bowl of warm oatmeal cooked in creamy almond milk with caramelized banana, maple syrup, and homemade nut butter. Now you might think: just give me a croissant with a thick layer of butter and a smear of strawberry jam. But in that bowl of oats, there are more calories than you think. And there are many more of those healthy things that contain a hell of a lot of hidden calories. Sorry in advance if you thought you were eating healthy, but this list is going to hurt.

1. Latte macchiato

Do you easily down five lattes every day? Then scratch your head for a moment. Latte macchiatos are usually made with whole milk. Five lattes are the same as a whole carton of whole milk. Not only is that quite fatty, but it also contains about 350 kcal, aka three large stroopwafels.

2. Bagel with cream cheese and smoked salmon

A winner in the editorial office, but the calories (and fats) really add up with this popular sandwich. And you’ll be hungry again in an hour because that cozy white round contains quite a bit of empty, useless carbohydrates.

3. Salad to go

At the station, your love grabs a nice sausage roll (calorie bomb) for the road. You're doing well with a salad from AH to go. But that’s not always as healthy as you think. Under those salads often lurks a slice of pasta or potatoes. Now you can of course leave those behind, but you can't escape the hidden sugars in that greasy dressing.

“I’m already looking forward to my oatmeal breakfast tomorrow morning”

4. Sushi

You don’t want to hear this, and I forget this sentence myself quickly after typing it, but sushi is not as healthy as it seems. The rice mixture contains quite a bit of sugar, and in the Netherlands, sushi is often made tasty with mayonnaise or another fatty colleague. Sorry girlfriend, but honesty lasts the longest.

5. Muesli bars

You think you're being healthy by tossing a bar in your bag. Unfortunately, muesli bars almost always contain sugar. Make your muesli bars yourself, then you can make them as sweet as you want and also vary greatly in flavors (cinnamooooon).

6. Eggs Benedict

Hmm, I think there’s no better brunch for Sunday. With that Bloody Mary on the side. It takes me back to London, where this secretly stood in front of me every weekend. But that Bennie, he’s a sneaky one because he easily contains 800 kcal.

7. Smoothies

Smoothies that you buy in the store or order in your favorite coffee shop are packed with fruit, but they also contain whole milk, yogurt, nuts, and seeds. You think you're being healthy, but after a little math, you find out that it’s actually quite a calorie bomb. Still in the mood for a juice? Then take a juice that is not enriched with dairy and nuts but contains a combination of vegetables.

8. Cinnamon roll

Also just 800 kcal. Doesn’t bother me.

I’m already looking forward to my oatmeal breakfast tomorrow morning, including 400 calories.
