BYE BYE WIFI ADDICTION

(These are the 10 best destinations to be completely unreachable)

In one of my favorite cafés in Utrecht, there is a sign that says: ‘No, we don’t have Wifi. We talk to each other :-)’ I think that’s brilliant. Just chatting and relaxing. Away from all digital devices and immersing yourself in the world of simple, uncomplicated existence. Sounds pretty nice, right? It’s also called a Digital Detox (DD).
Suddenly, DD is quite trendy. Not very surprising, actually, in a time when we all sit scrolling, liking, filming, and swiping like apathetic amoebas behind our iPhones. I myself did the phone challenge: a weekend without social media. But to be honest, that one-time project has never happened again, eh, since then. Which is actually quite silly, because we all find it chill to have more time for other things.
It remains a struggle. We are so used to being constantly reachable that it’s hard to take a step back from it. On one hand, we want to stay updated on everything, and on the other hand, we want a wonderfully carefree existence ‘like in the old days’. Now suppose you are one of those types who says: I want to detox this summer. Escape from all the messages, posts, pings, and emails. Then it’s time for action. Fortunately, travel search engine KAYAK found out in which cities the chance of Wifi in hotels is the smallest. In short: the perfect destinations for a Digital Detox.
Havana is firmly at the top of the list. In the Cuban city, 98 percent (!) of hotels have no Wifi. It’s almost like you’re on vacation in the last century. A distant second is Manila, where 27 percent of hotel rooms have no signal. But honestly, if you’re going on vacation to the Philippine capital, you have better things to do than watch cat videos in the lobby or see how your colleagues are working, right? The same goes for the capital of South Korea, Seoul. 27 percent of hotels there do not offer access to the digital highway. So if you’re still looking for an oasis of digital peace: I would say book one of the options below and enjoy the silence. You can thank me later.
