Destination Dream Life
Bali Foodies life + 5 x favorite breakfast spots in Canggu
Always hungry. If you know us a bit by now, you know that we are real foodies. The only thing we like more than talking about it is eating, haha. All day long it goes back and forth on the app with friends: “Where are we going to eat tonight?” “What are you in the mood for?” “Shall we grab a coffee?” We can really get hangry, okay, especially Pris, if she doesn't eat on time, oehhhh... that's why this column is dedicated to our favorite topic FOOD and in response to frequently asked questions: our favorite breakfast spots in Canggu.
Bali is truly a food paradise. On every corner of the street, there’s a nice little place with delicious food. The choices are endless. If you are on vacation here, you can literally eat your way through your trip. Okay, the next part probably sounds mega spoiled, but we hardly ever cook here. Why should we? It’s more expensive to make food ourselves, and we can just hop on our motorbikes and eat whatever we feel like (or have it delivered at home via the Go-Jek app. Yup, we even sometimes have our coffee delivered at home when we are busy...) Ultimate, right? We are also invited daily by restaurants to come eat and take nice photos for Instagram. Uhmm, yes! Will work for food.
We find nothing more delightful and cozy than dining with friends and family. Enjoying a good chat about everything and anything while having a happy belly. That really comes from home. There was always food on the table: ‘Oh, they want to come eat? Sure, no problem, there’s more than enough.’ Our families love to cook and pamper (read: stuff us full slash feed us). Really typical Indo and Moluccan.
Because we want to eat all day long, we naturally choose health food as much as possible. Veggies for life! We are vegetarian but are trying to eat more vegan. So everything plant-based and no animal products like eggs. We hardly consume dairy anymore because we have never really been able to handle it (bloated for life; relatable or not?). We try to take in as little sugar as possible (Eve is currently on a two-month sugar-free diet because she is on an antiparasitic treatment, eeek! Long live the tropics…). But normally, no week goes by without indulging in cakes from Kim Soo, desserts at Peloton, and affogatos from Pison (OMG, if you don’t know what this is yet, google it asap, you need this in your life). Luckily, we are addicted to sports; otherwise, we would probably have a different bikini size by now, haha.
If you have read our previous column (see here), then you know we are hard at work on our Canggu Guide. Well, it’s almost finished now, whoohoo! We are so mega excited and because we can’t really keep it to ourselves, we’ll reveal our top 5 breakfast spots in Canggu to you here:
1. Peloton Supershop
The first, real, fun, and delicious vegan café in town ‘where love rules’. Not only delicious, but also almost too beautiful to eat. A ‘planet-friendly’ spot in the heart of Berawa (one of the many cool neighborhoods in Canggu) that you really shouldn’t miss. They also sell super cool bikes and have recently opened for dinner.
Fave: Plant Powered brekkie salad with gluten-free bread. Their aioli & pesto spread is to die for.
Tip: Try the coconut cappuccino and if you have room for dessert: a scoop of coconut ice cream from Mad Pops. OMG. Oh yes, and the pecan pie. *we are drooling while typing.
2. Shady Shack
Breakfasting in a tropical garden; Shady Shack is so cozy and snug. You sip your juice among the palm leaves. Deliciously healthy, vegan, gluten-free, and lactose-free, and as the cherry on top: all-day breakfast. YAY!
Fave: Green Peace Smoothie Bowl with spirulina. Ideal before we go surfing.
Tip: Don’t leave without trying one of the desserts you can choose from the display. So delicious! Read: happy bellies.
3. Cafe Vida
Breakfasting with the locals. In a Balinese living room, you enjoy your breakfast. Everything on the menu is homemade, natural, and especially very tasty. We usually stop by quickly for a breakfast snack, juice, and ginger shot before we go work out.
Fave: Acai Bliss Balls & Superfood Purple Haze smoothie.
Tip: Order the most Instagrammable smoothie bowl ever. Super tasty and healthy, but especially beautiful for a photo.
4. The Slow
Our favorite boutique hotel near Batu Bolong Beach (the best surf spot for beginners), where you can enjoy a peaceful and delicious breakfast in a botanically inspired restaurant. Perfect for an early morning coffee stop.
Fave: Definitely the coffee. They have beans from local brand Expat Roasters: strong and flavorful. We are also really fans of the ‘nuts and seeds toast’ with avocado crush, nomnomnom.
Tip: Stay here for a night, it’s hip and cozy. The rooms are filled with cool art and the interior is truly fantastic. They also organize fun exhibitions and events every month.
5. Café Organic
A cozy spot to eat with your friends or partner. Especially fun because everything looks so delicious island style. They have a vegetarian menu, but also many vegan & raw options. We like!
Fave: Pineapple house salad, a whole pineapple filled with all kinds of delicious things and the Macha pancakes. Heeeeerlijk!
Tip: Go early. It’s such a popular place that it’s almost always full.
We could go on for hours with fun tips, but we’ll save those for you in the Canggu Guide, hihi. Okay, we’re now hopping on the scooter to dinner and are already thinking about where we’re going to have breakfast tomorrow morning.
Sea you next week!
xoxo
Pris & Eve
