Body & Mind

EAT THIS AND YOU'LL NEVER HAVE STRESS AGAIN

Move aside, move aside, move aside, make room, make room, make room… Yes, busy indeed. That's us. You too. We want everything at once and what we really want is to miss absolutely nothing. This only makes us busier, not just in our bodies, but certainly also in our minds. Result: stress. In our private lives and in the workplace. Where we used to get a burnout at 50, nowadays you can be sitting at home on the couch by 25. We can no longer cope with setbacks, which makes us fall over more easily. Such a shame. And when you're stressed, you often eat a lot and especially the wrong things – which only makes you feel worse. Did you know that you can actually eat a whole bunch of things to counter that stress? Feeling a bit down and could use a pick-me-up? Then throw this in your basket.

Celery with peanut butter

A snack that made me incredibly happy as a child. But whether my mother gave me this for a reason…. This match made in heaven ensures that you sleep well and soundly. Celery contains tryptophan, which promotes the production of serotonin, which in turn affects sleep and emotions, among other things.

Vegetables

Eating cruciferous vegetables and greens, such as cauliflower, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts, is apparently very good against stress. They help detoxify stress hormones.

Walnuts

Stress causes certain substances, such as vitamin B, zinc, and magnesium, to deplete faster in the body. By grabbing a handful of nuts during stress, you replenish these in a healthy way. Just be careful not to grab nuts too late, as there's a good chance you won't be able to sleep. And you really need that sleep.

Bananas

Bananas are full of vitamin B6, a good serotonin booster. Additionally, a banana contains a lot of melatonin, which helps you fall asleep.

Fish

Change that piece of meat a bit more often for a ‘fatty’ fish, such as salmon or mackerel. These types contain a lot of omega-3 fatty acids that can help us against stress. They help you sleep better and improve your mood. Additionally, omega-3 also contains the necessary vitamin B, magnesium, and zinc.

Hot water with lemon and ginger

This warming drink cleanses your body and gets your digestion going. It flushes out waste and boosts your immune system.

Garlic

Don't worry, I'm not going to make you suck on a clove of garlic, but incorporating garlic into a dish is not only intensely delicious but also incredibly healthy. With prolonged stress, your immune system can weaken, making you more susceptible to illnesses. Eating garlic gives your immune system a positive boost. It also helps with inflammation in joints.

CHEESE

In capital letters, yes. Best news of the day. All the more reason to plop down on the couch tonight with a nice piece of cheese. And preferably a raw milk one. Calcium in cheese relaxes your muscles and takes away the tension in your body.

Oysters

Slurping oysters, not only incredibly sexy but also a good way to give your body a boost. Oysters are packed with antioxidants and selenium that your body needs to master stress. The zinc in the slimy stuff ensures that your immune system gets a boost.

Dark chocolate

We certainly don't mind that. It even turns out that eating 40 grams of dark chocolate with more than 70 percent cocoa daily is good against stress. This is because chocolate contains beta-endorphins that are said to help against stress. You could also opt for cacao nibs; they contain little sugar and a lot of cocoa. Dark chocolate stimulates the brain to produce endorphins and lowers blood pressure. You should go for 70% or higher in cocoa, otherwise it won't work.
