Gezond met een budget

Ten euros for a well-filled tray of junk at McDonald's but finding healthy food expensive? I don't quite understand it. I often hear that people associate healthy eating with high prices.

And yes, organic products in supermarkets may be much more expensive than ‘normal’ products, but that doesn't mean there aren't affordable healthy options.

Living healthily is not a matter of money. It's a matter of knowledge, and the more you learn, the simpler and cheaper it becomes to live healthily. Because healthy food can be very simple. Leave the packages and bags aside more often and cook with fewer ingredients.

Try making something yourself more often instead of buying ready-made. With this list, you will also make healthier and cheaper choices, and you really don't need a fat wallet for that.

1. If you're a huge meat eater, this is already a point where you can save a lot. I'm not going to take your steak, chicken breast, or grandma's famous meatball away from you, but you could cut back a bit. Start by having one or two meatless days a week, and you'll see that your bank account will thank you. You'll also have a budget left for healthier choices. This way, on the days you do eat meat, you can make responsible, organic choices.

2. Buy as many seasonal vegetables and fruits as possible. They are both cheaper and tastier.

3. Leave the packages and bags on the shelves from now on. Make as much as possible yourself and flavor your food with fresh herbs and spices.

4. Create your own vegetable garden. It looks really nice and saves you a lot of fresh produce this summer.

5. Buy vegetables and fruits that are on sale.

6. Cook in large quantities. Got leftovers? Freeze them. This way, you always have something at home when you come home late or don't feel like grocery shopping. It saves you another order from Foodora.

7. Go to a fresh market on Saturdays. Local products are often cheaper, fresher, and incredibly flavorful.

8. Use your leftover vegetables and fruits for a homemade smoothie. Do you know how much those juices cost if you have to buy them at a juice bar?

9. Freeze brown bananas. Perfect for banana bread or in your smoothie.

Healthy food can be very simple.

10. Keep a close eye on the contents of your fridge. You often forget that there's a stray carrot, a bunch of spring onions, or a container of salmon scraps in there. Do you know what a delicious omelet you can make from this?

11. Leave the bags of chips, packs of cookies, and chocolate bars in the store. They only make you crave more. And your favorite jeans won't be too happy about it either.

12. Leave superfoods in the store. You don't need them to live healthily, and they are often expensive.

13. Create a herb garden in your own kitchen. Those pots not only look great, but pre-packaged herbs are expensive and don't last as long.

14. Keep an eye on promotions and try going to a different supermarket.

15. Use butter or olive oil more often instead of coconut oil (because it's more expensive).

16. Also buy vegetables that you wouldn't normally pick. Celeriac, cabbage varieties, and other Dutch vegetables are often cheaper and very versatile.

17. Choose dried legumes instead of canned legumes. They last much longer and are much cheaper.

18. Drink more water and tea instead of unhealthy soft drinks. Spice it up with a slice of lemon, some cucumber slices, or a piece of ginger. Cheaper and healthier.
