suffering from acne?
Then this shouldn't be in your kitchen anymore
‘Simone, I suddenly have all these pimples again. Help me pretty please, what should I do?’ A question that I have already been thrown at multiple times. And you probably still know the old wives' tales: putting toothpaste on the spots, diving under the tanning bed to dry them out, or stuffing them with strawberry jam. Bonjour, get out the door quickly, because they really won't work. However, there are certain things in the kitchen that you better leave alone if you have an impure skin. It's definitely worth a try.
1. Anything that is ‘low fat’
We are often fooled by these kinds of (so-called) skinny products. Because where they often remove the fats, other flavor enhancers are used. Often, low in fats also means high in sugars. And sugar is not so good for your skin. They damage your collagen fibers, making your skin less able to recover. Result: impurities arise. Replace these kinds of products with healthy fats like avocado, nuts, and fatty fish.
2. Dairy
The hormone-like substances in dairy products are often culprits for impure skin. Strange but true, the low-fat variant contains relatively more of these substances than semi-skimmed and full-fat products. The proteins in these products can also influence a rapid rise in glucose levels. Are you addicted to your latte macchiatos at the office or can't you do without your oatmeal breakfast? Then try going for a plant-based variant. Your oatmeal also tastes super delicious with almond milk, and have you ever tried a Coconut Latte?
3. Vegetable oil
Some oils you might as well throw straight in the trash. Corn oil and soybean oil are vegetable oils that consist of man-made trans fats and Omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids. Sounds like Chinese, but take my word for it: they are not good for your body. Replace these bottles with extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, or rapeseed oil.
4. (Whole grain) bread
Whoa, hold on. It may very well be that you don't have any issues with your sandwiches. But if you are sensitive to gluten without having celiac disease, then bread may do you more harm than good. Gluten sensitivity is becoming more common and can manifest as impure skin.
5. Fruit smoothies
Don't throw your blender out the window just yet, because I certainly won't take your homemade smoothies of pure vegetables and fruit away from you. The pre-packaged variants in the supermarket, on the other hand, are loaded with a stack of sugar cubes, and you better leave those alone from now on. Better yet, bite into an apple or a banana. Much more nutritious since a lot of fiber is lost in the blender.
6. Candy, chocolate, and other sugar bombs
Well, and you probably don't want to hear this, but sugar is, as I already mentioned, a major culprit in acne. Go easy on the candy jar and that chocolate bar. I won't ban it completely, but protect yourself and go for one piece of chocolate and not the whole bar right away.
