SUMMER IN THE CITY
with Sabrina Meijer
Sabrina Meijer has had one of the most well-known personal style blogs since 2007: afterDRK. She stopped it, manually deleting, one by one, the thousands of posts from her online platform. She did this to prevent loss of followers and to make a fresh start with IntoIT magazine. IntoIT is an online photography magazine about fashion and beauty, where it’s not about selfies and outfits, but about her artistic vision. It’s something Sabrina puts her heart and soul into. I got to know her with a glass of wine in hand at one of the most beautiful bays of the Portuguese coast. I already know what’s in her glass, but Sabrina, we want more…
It’s summer…
1. What’s in your glass?
‘Very light pink rosé.’
2. Where do you settle when the temperature rises above twenty degrees?
‘When I have to work, I sit with my laptop on my mini-rooftop terrace, but if I can shift some work around, I like to go to Wijk aan Zee. Or to Durgerdam if I don’t have a car available.’
3. Your secret favorite spot to absorb extra, EXTRA hours of sun? Yes, we want your secret terrace.
‘I really like to sit by the Amstel in the grass with a book near café Weesper. There, the sun seems to shine the longest, and at Weesper you can also grab a nice snack to end the day or start a long evening.’
4. And what’s on your plate?
‘I’ve developed a new addiction from Greece: fried zucchini. Luckily, it’s almost nowhere to be found here, otherwise I would quickly end up looking like something fried.’
5. What destination is on your ticket?
‘I’ve already been away three times this summer: to my parents (who live near Alicante), to Crete with Nicole, and I just returned from Santorini.’
6. The three ingredients you need for the perfect holiday?
‘Good company, sun, and a car, so you can decide where and when you move.’
7. What book are you reading this summer?
‘I’m in a sort of psychological self-help book phase.’
8. And what’s coming out of your speakers?
‘Right now, I really like the new album by HAIM (‘Something To Tell You’), and besides that, I actually have very bad taste in music that you can mainly here listen back to.’
9. Are you the tennis racket type or do your toes not come out of the sand?
‘I find sitting still really intensely difficult, but with a beach ball set, I’m motorically disturbed, so I just take a dive very regularly. And I’m also that one poor soul who has to hold her nose when she jumps into the water.’
10. Your tip for when there’s a long flight on the agenda?
‘My luck is that I fall asleep within five minutes in any moving vehicle (not a good partner for a road trip), so I usually sleep before we take off. Just make sure to apply sunscreen and drink plenty of water, but that’s of course the biggest cliché tip I can give.’
11. How does your ideal summer day go?
‘Unplanned and unexpected.’
12. And what do you immediately grab from the closet to wear when it’s finally warm?
‘My floral dress from Réalisation Par.’
13. Where did you go on vacation as a child?
‘Italy! That is and remains my favorite country. Because I – especially as a child – got so intensely tanned, everyone in Italy always thought I was Italian, so my parents often lost track of me when I was chatting with some stranger in a language I didn’t speak.’
14. Are you a luxury type or do you go back to basics in a tent and be green by the campfire?
‘Tents are not for me. I’m easily content, but I also thrive with a bit of luxury.’
15. What do you do in the summer that would never occur to you in the winter?
‘In the summer, I go dancing much more often or randomly go out the door at half past eleven.’
16. Are you team soft serve or team water ice?
‘I’m not on team ice, just give me a bowl of watermelon.’
17. Your most delightful/funniest/hilarious memory of a vacation romance?
‘Haha, I’ll skip this one.’
