“You must be so proud of your daughter.” Okay, I am backstage at the Victoria Beckham show, where I get to be the chaperone of Maartje Verhoef who has just turned 17. I decide to take it as a compliment. On one hand, very old, but hey, any relationship that leads to Maartje Verhoef should be considered the greatest compliment. I try to put myself in ‘mother Maartje's’ shoes; what must it be like: one moment sitting on the bike to Eindhoven, the next moment flying to New York, Barbados, Miami and back again. Or what about Daphne Deckers, who waved goodbye to her son Alec on the same day (I repeat: the same day) as he went to play tennis in Florida? Not for a week, but for a while. And also daughter Emma, who went to study drama in L.A. And oh yes, to top it off, her husband Richard (who took up the profession of tennis coach) also left that day for six weeks. “I suddenly noticed that the clock in the kitchen was making a ticking sound, I had never heard that before,” she told me during lunch. And that clock had been there for 15 years.

You have to be flexible as a mother. In any case. But with such adventurous and talented children, it adds another layer. Like Barry and Sandra Hay, who waved goodbye to their daughter Bella from sunny Curaçao. Bella didn't find it so sunny and had her suitcase ready during her last exam for high school. Straight from school, she headed to the airport and flew to Amsterdam. Away from her parents, on to the music adventure.

Fortunately, my daughters are not there yet. They have no idea what they want to be later. Recently, I was curious and snooped in a friendship book of my daughter's best friend. Maybe I could find something about what these girls dream of. Under the heading ‘what I want to be later’, it was written in capital letters: ‘MOTHER’. And that is indeed an incredibly tough job, but also the most fun. Especially if you have daughters like the girls in this issue.
