Body & Mind

These cookbooks you want on your wish list

Last weekend I had to make some room again, you know. Not because I had shopped myself poor again, but on the shelf. In the past weeks, many beautiful books have been released. And I want them. All of them. And so do you. It comes in handy that Sinterklaas is back in the country and the lists can be conjured up again. I've already found the content for you. You also want these gems on your bookshelf.

1. From Oats to Grits – Ingrid Hofstra

As an intense lover of oatmeal, grits, risotto, and millet, this beautiful book by Ingrid Hofstra had to conquer a spot on my shelf. ‘From oats to grits’ contains sweet and savory recipes that can each be labeled as porridge. Then you immediately think of that bowl of mush that was put in front of you back in the day. Too bad, because porridge goes much further than that memory. Every culture has its own unique porridge classics, and nowadays the best chefs work with the soft, thick liquid dish. From groats to risotto, kheer, and fish puree; with these 60 seasonal recipes, you can now vary endlessly.

2. We Eat at Home – Samuel Levie

As a huge vegetable eater, I was extremely happy when I was handed this by a colleague. Eating together with his family is what makes Samuel Levie happy, especially when family recipes are on the menu. In this book, he shares his favorites, which by the way are also my favorites. Broccoli with anchovies and pepperoncino, eggplants in lentil batter, and his mother's brownies.

3. Home Sweet Home – Yvette van Boven

I love Yvette. Why? You only know when you cook one of the intensely delicious recipes from this book home sweet home. Her fifth book is about her culinary roots, which lie in Ireland. In this time of diets, superfoods, and the whole vegan hype, Yvette wants to give you something very different: the love for real Irish, warming comfort food. Onion soup with Guinness, crispy pork stew with soft onion sauce, or a real Irish cream liquor fudge. After this book, you will make the best Irish coffee you have ever been served in your life.

4. Green Kitchen at Home

The new cookbook by David and Luise is perhaps their best yet, as they share their own favorites in this new collection, resulting in a delightful assortment of quick vegan recipes that even the biggest carnivore will enjoy. The over one hundred recipes in this cookbook are divided into seven chapters: fridge favorites, breakfast, handy meals, weekdays, weekends, spreads, and side and dessert dishes. I'm still looking for someone to come make the banana-spinach pancakes for me. Going once, going twice? Then I'll put the lemon ricotta lasagna in the oven.

5. Easy Vegan, Living The Green Life

Would you like to leave that piece of meat alone a bit more often, or do you notice that your body feels less good with all that dairy we consume nowadays? Then you are in the right place with this new colorful book from ‘Living The Green Life’. In ‘Easy Vegan’, Sanne van Rooij shows how you can always eat deliciously and healthily with a plant-based lifestyle, no matter where, with whom, or how busy you are, and whether you are fully vegan or just want to make more plant-based choices. Believe me, if you put the tempeh lentil burger or the richly filled tagine on the table tonight, no one will ask for that missed piece of meat.
