This is how to choose the right cream for your skin

This morning, as I eagerly opened a new jar of day cream, it suddenly started behaving very strangely with me. It becomes somewhat grainy when I rub it over my face (which, by the way, I'm not allowed to do according to my mother, because that gives you pimples). Story of my life, because I have a nose for the wrong cream for my skin. I also find it difficult, by the way, because do you belong to the oily, combination, or dry club? Do you need to hydrate, nourish, or go anti-wrinkle? A deep sigh, because there you are with a jar of way too expensive cream.

To filter out the heavy artillery and jar-and-tube land, I enlisted our friend Marie-José from MJ Amsterdam. With these tips, you will always choose the crème de la crème from now on.

1. Easy or Korean

If you prefer convenience, then the 24-hour cream is ideal. Just the same one for morning and evening, you don't have to think about it. This can only be done with an easy skin, which is a bit dehydrated. You can also go all out Asian style. In Korea, a beauty routine of 10 steps is not unusual, for example. But a rich, creamy cream for when your skin repairs itself at night is a great choice, and during the day you choose something easier that you can quickly apply makeup over.

For normal skin, choose a moisturizing cream with UV protection and for the nighttime hours, a slightly greasier cream. By the way, choose the anti-wrinkle version if you have passed thirty (oh dear, it's that time for me). Is your skin a bit oilier? Go for a light, fluid-like lotion for the day and a moisturizing cream for the night. Yes, because even oily skin benefits from hydration, as skincare products for oily skin often dry it out. Is your skin type on the sensitive side? Be careful with anti-aging. This activates the skin and can have a counterproductive effect. Choose a protective cream and apply something calming in the evening.

2. Age is not just a number

Have you been applying an anti-wrinkle cream to your face since your twenties, just in case? You'd better stop that. Some creams contain ingredients that are not beneficial for skin under forty and can actually cause damage. There are different products for every age and skin type, so don't just throw anything in your cart but get some advice.

3. Stay monogamous

Even with a limited budget, good creams can be found. Just make sure you stay loyal. Once you've found the right cleanser and moisturizer, don't start experimenting anymore. A scrub, mask, or serum can always be added, but that's it. Stick to the right creams. Yes, you will remain monogamous.

4. In shape

Your skin is a snapshot. If someone determines your skin type, it won't stay that way for the rest of your life. Adapt to the circumstances. Do you work in an airplane or hospital? Then there's a good chance you have dehydrated skin, even if it was oily during that skin analysis.

Hormones, stress, a lot of exercise (and thus showering too often and too hot) and diet also have an impact. And I've postponed it for four steps, but smoking, drinking, and too much sugar also have everything to do with the condition of your skin. It's not a question of whether you'll get wrinkles, but when and how many. So you can apply until you weigh a ton.

5. So the most important thing: ask for advice and test it

This is actually the most, most, most important thing. A beautician or cosmetics expert naturally wants to sell you something, but preferably something that suits you. Otherwise, they will never see you again. Therefore, you can assume that the advice is knowledgeable and correct. Free translation: don't just throw a cream in your cart.

Oh yes, and you also want to know this:
– Don't use old makeup, it's not good for your skin.

– Don't expect miracles from your cream, real wrinkles won't disappear with a cream.

– Look at the season, you can use a lighter version of your cream in the summer (not necessary).
– Cosmetics come with a price tag, the higher the concentration of active ingredients, the higher the price.
