The biker boot
It is autumn. We find all sorts of things about it, but there is a silver lining to be seen in a dark cloud cover and that is: autumn is the cue for new clothes. And more clothes. To quote New York style guru Iris Apfel: more is more and less is a bore. And so it is. A new season calls for new outfits and how convenient it is to start with a shoe? If it is striking and well chosen, you will see that you can get quite far with what is already hanging in your closet. I checked the latest trend with Iris Gravemaker, stylist at Omoda, which shoe is the ‘shoe of the moment’.
Iris, take it away. What is the shoe of the moment?
“There are many of course because fashion is no longer such that only one look is dictated, but the biker boot, the motorcycle boot, is a shoe that actually fits every age, every outfit, and every occasion. So if I have to point one out, it is this one. It is a mainstream shoe that perfectly suits people who are not overly concerned with their outfit, but because you see it a lot on the catwalk lately and it is also worn a lot by celebrities, it is really a fashion hit.”
Now there are undoubtedly people who struggle with the question: how do I wear that?
“That can be done in so many different ways. Casual with skinny jeans and a large woolen sweater over it, for example. Optionally, you can style it off with a leather motorcycle jacket. What I also really like is under a tulle skirt with either a blazer, a sweater, or again a motorcycle jacket if you want it a bit tougher. My favorite variant is when you wear it very girly under a romantic dress and of course, you can also go for the complete rock look with black skinny jeans, a T-shirt with a hard rock print, and a leather jacket.”
Which celebrities can you picture in their biker boots?
“Kate Moss is definitely the queen of motorcycle boots, but Olivia Palermo, who is often very feminine in her style, makes them a bit more chic. Recently I saw Kaia Gerber, the daughter of Cindy Crawford, in a look with biker boots and it looked great under a dress with a biker jacket.”
Where does this trend start and where does it end?
“I really find it too cute on children, both boys and girls. Furthermore, I think it can work for almost every age, although I would vary with the type of boot. Those with studs and lots of straps and buckles I think suit younger people more. A calm biker boot with an ankle strap can also work for a trendy grandma.”
What are your favorites from your collection?
“Sendra really has the beautiful, classic biker boot, while the one from Guess has a bit more bling bling and is a real eye-catcher. The variant from AS98 has zippers at the top and is made of softer leather, which makes it nicely fall around your calf. Mjus has a mix between a hiking boot and the biker boot that is very suitable for people who may want to make a less fashion statement.”
