WHY WAKING UP EARLY IS CRAZY
IT'S CRAZY

At five twenty-five the alarm went off. The first reaction that came to me was to throw the whining phone against the wall with great force. Why? But why did I think this was a good idea? I rolled over to my right and at five thirty it rang for the second time. Come on Adeline, get out of bed. No snoozing you intense sleepyhead, get up!

Anna Wintour, the power woman behind American Vogue, stands right next to her bed at exactly five in the morning. She also goes to bed at ten in the evening, so no tossing and turning for this grande dame, I think. But because of those early hours, she has a head start on all of America. Look, that's what I want too. Not on America, because I don't care about that, but on the Netherlands then. And this morning I had it. I got into the car at a quarter past six (you should move your shower scene to the evening by the way) and then you sprint ahead of the traffic. At five to eight I stepped into the editorial office: what a peace, what a silence. Around half past nine the girls trickled in and I had already been alive and typing for an hour and a half. I loved it. And this is why I'm going to do it more often...

  1. Did I already mention that you get ahead of the rest of the working people? In those hours, you are already fully at work. Or you go exercise (if you feel like it, of course).
  2. And just think about that summer afternoon on the terrace. If you start working earlier, you can sometimes also head towards that well-deserved dry white wine at the end of the afternoon a bit earlier.
  3. It's quiet on the street, so nice. A blackbird sings again, which you can really hear, and the sun rises so beautifully. But enough about the natural phenomena, because the traffic lights are also flashing green like it's a joy. And again, little traffic on the road means zero irritation is particularly zen.
  4. By the way, it's also quiet in the office. Unless you work with early birds, but that's a rare breed here at the editorial office, I can tell you. In that hour alone, you get an intense amount of work done. And you also have your planning and the agenda up to date in a very organized way. Yes, yes, employee of the month, guys.
  5. It also sounds so actively nice. Our Simone always gets up at six, even though her house is in Amsterdam. And she has already had a day before she joins us. Simone is fit, has the discipline of three people combined, and is incredibly tidy. Man, man, man, maybe it will eventually become something with me.

Okay, I need to go to bed. That thing goes off at half past five and I want to storm through the day just as fresh and fruity tomorrow. You get it, I get it. Sleep well.
