Unfortunately: Drinking water before going to bed does not help against a hangover

If you're in the mood for a good party where, well, about four bottles of wine are consumed and some bubbles are flying through the air: be warned.

Because you're going to feel the hangover one way or another. Ever since I can remember, I've been enthusiastically and wobbly hanging under the tap after a night of cozy partying. And then I think about things. Like: water, that's goooooood for the drunken person. That last glass of red? Wasn't necessary at all. Did I drink beer? Is my bike locked? Am I tipsy? When I ask myself that, I actually already know the answer. Come on, drink a lot of water, then I'll still be a bit fresh and juicy tomorrow and I'll still have something from my well-deserved Saturday. Drinking water helps against that headache, nausea, and general malaise that a hangover brings... Right?

Yes, but no. Nothing could be further from the truth. Research shows that drinking water before going to bed absolutely does not lead to a less severe hangover . Sorry. Don’t blame the messenger. But the damage is already done by then. The alcohol is already in your body, and those few sips of water won't change that.

Well, what should I do then? I once dove into the literature on hangovers and what turns out?

  • Taking an Advil before you throw yourself into a coma in your bed? Doesn't work either. An ibuprofen doesn't either.
  • Drinking a Dropshot or Flügel in the morning to fight fire with fire? Works a bit, but yes, that's just postponing the execution, so to speak.
  • By dancing a little extra just before you go home, you burn more energy and thus burn off that alcohol in your body, right? Unfortunately. You might as well hang out at the bar. That brings me to the next point: moving in the morning glory.
  • Because that is a plus point: exercising in the morning to feel 100% fit again is also a myth. Thank the lord.
  • Eggs and bacon for breakfast? Eating a pear just before you gulp down a glass of wine? Eating a greasy snack before you go to sleep? None of it works. It's nice, of course, but unfortunately, that headache is just there.

Okay, what can you do if you really want to cry from the misery in your body that you caused yourself? There is only one thing that helps against a hangover and that is: drink a little less the next time you go partying. Yes, that sounds very boring, but then I’ll be boring next weekend. Because I don't know if this has been proven, but it really feels like this: hangovers only get worse as you get older. No, that last glass of red was really unnecessary.

FACTS

  • Smoking makes your hangover worse.
  • Dark drinks like red wine or cognac give you worse hangovers.
  • Women have worse hangovers than men because we women have less water in our bodies but more body fat. Men generally have more muscles where more water is stored.
