4x special overnight stays in your own country
As I type this piece, I look out over a picturesque courtyard with white linen-covered tables, a beautiful large tree providing shade over the entire terrace, and a cheerful bubbling fountain in the middle. And no, this delightful scene is not taking place in France, but right here in our own country. Jon and I have made it a sport to find small but unique spots in the Netherlands for a weekend getaway. And especially with these summery temperatures, you absolutely don't need to cross the border for that ultimate vacation feeling. I must confess that sometimes I can't see the forest for the trees and that I've also completely missed the mark regarding location (something with Airbnb, the owner coming home with a ‘fling’ and us then standing in the street in the middle of the night because I just couldn't handle the moaning anymore) and that's why I now enlist the help of iamreservations.com: a booking site that only offers the most unique hotels and B&Bs. So no large, impersonal Booking.com with hundreds of options per city, but just a small selection of boutique hotels personally chosen by the owner of the site. If you're looking to spend a night away in your own country soon and are searching for a special location, then this list of the most unique sleeping spots in the Netherlands is something to note down.
De Bosuil, Landgoed de Holtweijde
When you open your curtains in the morning, you look out over the beautiful landscape of Twente. You hear nothing but the wind, a handful of birds, and with a bit of luck, you might spot a hare or deer from your private veranda. For those seeking a romantic weekend in nature, this is an absolute recommendation.
Vliegtuigsuite Teuge
Once I wanted to surprise Jon with this location, but ultimately my changed film shoots got in the way... This überdeluxe airplane features, among other things, a bathtub, a sauna, and three flat-screen TVs plus a DVD collection. But with that view and discovering all the spaces (I would set aside an hour just to explore the cockpit), you hardly have time to watch a movie. I better quickly attempt visit number two!

De Pier Suites, Scheveningen
As a true resident of The Hague, I find this a very special spot... Here you sleep on the Pier, including a jacuzzi and balcony with a view over the North Sea. The next morning, you're the first on the beach to claim the best spot.

De Gevangentoren Suite, Vlissingen
It's a bit of a climb, but after those eighty steps, you'll never want to leave. The view over the Westerschelde is breathtakingly beautiful, and the suite immediately feels warm and cozy. The restaurant downstairs is also definitely worth a visit.
