7 reasons why you need to go to the bathroom at night
If you’re just wandering around deep in dreamland, you wake up just before three because your bladder is about to burst, only to find yourself sitting on the toilet again two hours later. Randy Wexler, chairman of urology at Memorial Hospital in Illinois, researched this. So girlfriend, if you’re like me and go to the toilet every (yes, EVERY night), then it’s time to do something about it. It could very well be related to this.
You eat too much salt
Researchers from the University of Bagasaki have linked nighttime visits to the urinal to salt intake in a diet. People who regularly wake up at night with the urge to urinate are consuming too much salt, according to the Japanese.
You drink too much water
So you can actually drink too much water. Wexler also advises not to drink two hours before going to bed. This way, you at least know your bladder is empty when you crawl under the covers.
Caffeine
You know it, I know it.
Infection
If you have to go to the toilet a thousand times a day (including at night), it could very well be that you have a bladder infection. Burning sensation or a trace of blood in your urine? Then it’s wise to bring a morning sample to the doctor.
Fluid retention
If you’re retaining fluid in your legs and feet, this can also move to your bladder. The solution? Keep your legs elevated in the last hours before you dive into bed.
STI
Better safe than sorry. An STI can cause you to run to the toilet frequently. Particularly gonorrhea and chlamydia are STIs that manifest in this way. So it’s wise to do a quick test.
If you’ve just given birth
Just given birth? Then it may be that your pelvic floor has dropped. This also causes your bladder to drop and gives the feeling that you constantly need to squat.
