Can someone give Stefano Gabbano an Insta-muzzle?
Stefano Gabbana, half of the design duo Dolce & Gabbana, doesn't hold back his thoughts. It's nice and original in itself, but in his case, it also comes with the fact that he is not exactly shy on social media. And so he happily posts on Instagram. His latest feat was a post (though I must say that it can't be entirely credited to him personally since this was part of an official campaign) featuring a Chinese model trying to eat pasta and cannelloni with chopsticks. And China was, to say the least, not amused when they saw this.
Celebrities canceled their appearance at the show (which was set to take place three hours later), major department stores pulled all Dolce & Gabbana products from their shelves, and the account lost thousands of followers.
Ouch.
Not a smart move when a third of your revenue comes from China, amounting to 100 billion. I, but WHO am I really, didn't see anything wrong with the video. You could see it as connecting cultures, and that touch of humor can't be separated from the colorful label. It's precisely that label that people in China love so much. But okay, it went wrong, and if your market is that important, it might have been wise to show the video to a few people before it was posted. So much for the mistake. It happens. But then came Stefano Gabbana's response. The account would have been hacked. And then, well then the carrots were cooked. In other words: the turnips were done. Because this is not the first time that Lo Stefano has posted something on Insta without thinking about it for more than a nanosecond. Now follows a drumroll and here come the highlights.
1. Fight with Elton
Stefano Gabbana says on Instagram that he doesn't want to be called ‘gay’ because it's a word invented by people who want to label others. He also says that because he loves men, he doesn't want children. A child should have a father and a mother, he believes. If you, as a gay person, have a child through IVF and surrogacy or whatever, those are ‘synthetic’ children. This opens an Insta-fight with Elton John, who stands up for his children and asks everyone to boycott the brand. Madonna (have you seen her HOUSE?), once huge buddies with D&G, joins team Elton and shares her opinion with the 12.5 million followers she had at that time.
2. Fight with Chiara
Chiara Ferragni gets married and shows her dress. Stefano responds with the word ‘cheap’. Fair enough, but nice? Or wise? Who knows.
3. Fight with Kate Moss
Her dress is ‘nothing special’ according to the gospel of Stefano Gabbana.
4. Fight with Selena
The Catwalk Italia posted a series of photos of Selena Gomez where you see Selena flaunting in various red robes. Stefano didn't have his Insta-muzzle on again and quickly responds with the words that Selena is ‘so ugly’.
Stefano, Stefano... It's never boring with you, but you really don't get any friendlier with the years.
