Why you want to have a huge fight with Christmas
Do you prefer to throw a Christmas ornament at his head because he – well – exists? He is late buying gifts, doesn't help with cooking, mainly does what he wants to do, gets too drunk...
Well $^!&@^!!%!. Breathe in... Because you don't have to worry. Arguments are inevitably a bit part of those Christmas days. That's because we have a bit more stress now than on other days of the year. We want everything to be perfect, set the bar high. It has to be cozy now, with everyone we are with. And if your boyfriend isn't being cozy for a moment or doesn't do what you want, that whole glitter-unicorn-worldpeace-bomb will burst soon. You can be furious if he arrives late at your parents' place. You're furious if you end up having to do last-minute shopping for him because he hasn't bought anything. Or if he gives you some trinket while you've been busy for weeks with a great surprise. Or if he prefers gaming over having Christmas breakfast with you.
What do we often argue about during the holidays?
- Where you celebrate Christmas: his or your family, first or second Christmas day there or there? And staying over at the in-laws? That idea.
- About gifts we receive. Not just because we don't like them, but often because we feel our loved ones haven't put in any effort.
- Family drama. In every family, there's something to complain about. Always stand by your man, that's the smartest thing to do if you want to keep things cozy at home.
- Traditions. Don't you understand why he insists on playing tennis when it's almost time for Christmas dinner? Maybe he's been doing that for years with his father, and for him, that's just part of it. Let it go. Breathe in... Again.
Still, all that arguing around the annual Christmas celebration isn't too bad. It happens in the best relationships. Precisely because you are so familiar with each other, you dare to lash out a bit. Even when family is around, yes. Of course, it shouldn't get out of hand, but a little snark should be okay. Besides, afterwards, there's something to make up with a good glass of red and a nice long kiss by the fireplace. Alright, this way we do get a little excited about Christmas. But do buy those gifts on time, darling.
