Diary of a model
Lily spends her days as a model, rushing from shoot to show and then to another casting. On Amayzine, she tells you all about what her life is really like. Under a different name, of course, but that means she can share all the juicy details. This week: being at the airport in an hour.
‘Want to do something tomorrow?’ ‘Sure, but I actually have no idea what my schedule looks like. Is it okay if I let you know around seven?’
Pretty strange answer, right? Why don’t you even know what you’re doing tomorrow? Well, let me tell you. As a model, you actually have no control over your own schedule. Around six o'clock, I often receive my schedule for the next day via email. No email means you’re free, but often the day consists of castings, tests, or a shoot. Luckily, all my friends are models, so everyone lives the same way, and that’s why plans are often made only the night before. Still, the ‘last-minute life’ can sometimes throw a wrench in the works.
Up and down, up and down
As I mentioned earlier, castings are often scattered all over the city. By now, I know the metro/tube/subway by heart and know how to get from point A to point B the fastest with my portfolio in hand. On the days I’m free, I go do fun things, and I obviously don’t carry that heavy thing with me. Recently, I traveled to SoHo to have lunch with a friend. The moment I sat down, I received an email: ‘Last minute request casting at 3 in SoHo.’ That’s convenient: just around the corner from the lunch spot. But yeah, my portfolio was at home (about an hour's travel from SoHo), so I quickly shoved my lunch down. Yum, tasty, right? It was nice, well bye! AWKWARD!
Stress, pack, fly
I’m sometimes asked if I can be at the airport in an hour to catch a last-minute flight. I now know exactly what to throw in my bag, but it can still be very stressful. Sometimes I’m not home when the panic call comes and have to run to catch the taxi to the airport on time. It can also happen that I am home, but the airport is at least an hour away from me (if the traffic is good). Long story short: I’ve never missed a flight *knocks on wood*, but I have certainly had to run to the right gate a few times to catch the flight.
Washing schedule in disarray
Nice to go to the gym early in the morning to sweat a bit. *Pling*. ’Hey love, you have a last minute shooting, please go here ASAP.‘ I rush home, grab my bag, and look in the mirror. Oops: greasy sweaty hair. I actually wanted to wash my hair tonight, but there’s no other choice. Quickly turn on the tap, wash my hair, shave my legs (also not unimportant), and off to the shoot, with wet hair. The hairstylist is at least half an hour busy blow-drying, but hey, at least it’s clean.
Your life can change from minute to minute, but you prepare for that. My friends are now used to the ‘What are you doing in five minutes?’ messages, and I always have an extra set of guest bedding ready to shove into a bag. However, the moment I don’t have internet and can’t check my email, I start to stress. So I’ll just admit it now: I’m Lily and I’m a phone addict.
