It has been the hottest night ever

I don't know how you all are doing, but we are doing pretty... mediocre. Did you sleep? Exactly. Neither did we.

It has indeed been the hottest night ever: in De Bilt, it didn't cool down to less than 23.6 degrees last night. The old record is really peanuts. That was set in 2004 when the minimum temperature at night was 20.8 degrees. Just think about what we broke last night, all together. The warmest place last night was in Gelderse Deelen: 24.4 degrees. It didn't get any cooler.

That leads to funny reactions. And crying people. ‘I feel like I'm a walking buffet for mosquitoes,’ says a Twitter user. Another jokes: ‘The subtropical swimming pool Tropicana just reopened in my bed.’

Here are some handy facts in a row to get through today alive and well:

  • Whether you drink coffee or tea or something ice-cold doesn't make much difference for your body temperature.
  • Drinking one and a half to two liters of water is really a must on such hot days. And no, we don't mean water in the form of an ice cube in your gin and tonic.
  • If you don't drink any water at all, your brain shrinks and you get muscle cramps. If you still don't drink anything for days, your organs will start to fail one by one.
  • The lighter your urine is, the better hydrated you are.
  • Don't drink more than 0.75 to 1 liter of water per hour, otherwise, it's too much again. Your kidneys can't handle that.
  • Here hot? Don't be dramatic: in the American Death Valley (that's a desert in California), it has once been 56.7 degrees Celsius. The world record.
  • And the hottest night ever? That was measured in the desert of Oman: it didn't cool down much more than 42 degrees. Now that's when you can complain.
  • In 150 days, it will be Christmas again.

And because the ice pops are gone, here is our favorite Raketjes recipe from our friends at FavorFlav:

Raspberry ice cream
100 g raspberry puree
1 tsp sugar

Orange ice cream
100 g orange juice
1 tsp sugar
1 tbsp concentrated carrot juice

Pineapple ice cream
100 g pineapple puree
2 tsp sugar
1 tsp turmeric

Heat the two types of fruit puree and the orange juice separately and dissolve the sugar and any natural colorings in them. Let cool.

First pour a layer of raspberry puree into rocket molds, freeze, and then pour the orange juice on top. Freeze again and then pour the pineapple puree in. Don't forget to stick a stick in it.
