Why you cringe at chunks in your food
Before you take a bite of that bowl of yogurt with a freshly sliced apple and a pinch of cinnamon, I want to talk to you about something for a moment. Because there is surely a reason why you choose that creamy variant from the store shelf and that cup with chunks where after ten bites you still don't know if you have a raisin or a piece of apple in your mouth, let alone. Have you, like me, hated chunks in your food since childhood? No worries, friend, there is simply an explanation for it.
We find the texture of food at least as important as its taste, as a study from the American Duke Medical Center showed. In this study, the participants ate pureed products while blindfolded. It turned out that only forty percent of the cases could guess what they were actually eating.
We become more cautious when the texture of food is different from what we expect or are used to. This is related to our survival mechanism, which protects us from dirt and infections. The fact that you consciously choose to add your own apple to your yogurt does not make you a drama queen. An alarm bell goes off in your head that protects you from nasty diseases. So it's only healthy.
Enjoy your meal.
