In Between Seasons

The transition from summer to autumn. Which clothing items can stay a little longer and how do you combine your summer pieces with new autumn items?

Unfortunately, summer is officially over, but with temperatures still around 20 degrees, I find it difficult to say a definitive goodbye to my summer clothes. Anyway, I’m not a fan of autumn with all that dampness and wind, so I prefer to postpone the tights, boots, and thick coats for as long as possible.

Meanwhile, stores are filled with new collections, Instagram is overflowing with inspiration thanks to street style influencers, and the shopping basket from www.mytheresa.com can, before you know it, become quite full.

Indeed: all the ingredients that promise to make you fashionable for the new season are present.

I have friends who start to get nervous about their outfits for the new fashion season as early as August. Like crazy, they rush to shop, cold back from vacation, afraid of missing out, worried that that insane, super cute, and also super comfortable quilted jacket will be sold out the moment the weather allows it. Well, those diehard fashionistas are out there. And oops, yes, I confess: I used to do exactly the same.

I don’t mean to say that I never buy anything new during this so-called ‘in between seasons period’, of course I do, but I do approach it differently. Believe me, there are plenty of reasons to give yourself a little more time and not rush into impulsive purchases.

Because:

  • the full collections are usually only delivered after August.
  •  in your enthusiasm – new fashion, just in the store – you quickly buy something while you later discover (after viewing multiple collections) that the purchased item is less special than you initially thought.
  • if you take the time to inform and inspire yourself, you’ll find that you sometimes come to different decisions than initially planned, which can prevent impulse buys.
  • it’s wiser to let all that fashion info sink in, compare collections, and determine your look, so you can proceed more thoughtfully.

This knowledge and the fact that I find it difficult to say goodbye to my summer items have led to a sort of ‘in between seasons look’. I can recommend it.

Just a few tips:

Update your slip dress

That long dress you may have bought not too long ago can easily be worn for a long time. I combine it with a long, chunky knit cardigan or a sweater that is preferably a bit oversized.

Mules

Because I want to postpone wearing boots, which I usually wear with tights, I cherish my Gucci mules. Perfect to wear during this in-between period with a skirt or pants (if you have those lined with fur, you’re totally fine).

The pantsuit

Look, this is an investment you can’t go wrong with. The pantsuit is an ab-so-lute must-have for the upcoming season and the perfect garment for this time of year with which you can vary endlessly. Choose a good basic model and keep in mind that the jackets should be a bit oversized (unfortunately, those tailored blazers can go on Marktplaats).

Do denim

My jeans usually come out again when the warmest days are over. Jeans are the easiest, always good base and perfect for this moment. Do realize that even jeans are subject to fashion. Right now, the flared leg model is hot (not recommended if you weren’t born with revue legs), but there are countless alternatives; from skinny to boyfriend.

Conclusion

So, buying absolutely nothing new is not what I advocate. I do recommend first looking at what you can still wear from your summer wardrobe and how you can combine that (adjusted to the new season). And then take your time to determine your new look for autumn, let yourself be inspired (see Amayzine magazine with all runway looks), which will help you avoid impulse buys.

Wishing you lots of inspiration and fun,

Peggy
