That's not so smart, Jay-Z…
Well, you finally have your own streaming service Tidal, and suddenly there's a stir because the numbers seem to be manipulated here and there. What happened? Jay-Z's company is in trouble. Especially the listening figures of the albums of his wife Beyoncé and friend Kanye West are skyrocketing compared to other artists, um, quite a bit. But actually just a bit too much. Maybe so much that it's almost not credible anymore. In principle, no one finds out, until a number of investigative journalists sink their teeth into the issue (right, Dotan?). The Norwegian newspaper Dagens Næringsliv investigated Tidal and came out this week with a number of surprising facts. 1: Jay has tampered with the streaming figures of the albums Lemonade by Beyoncé and The Life Of Pablo by Kanye West and 2: the artists would have received much more royalties than they actually should have. The newspaper dug deeper into the numbers and found out that some subscribers would have had to listen to Lemonade 180 times in 24 hours to reach the high numbers, something that technically isn't even possible. Notable detail: both Tidal, spokespersons for Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Kanye West, and record labels Sony and Universal do not (yet) want to respond to the issue. A case of ‘where there's smoke, there's fire’? We'll keep an eye on you, Jay.
