The 10 most remarkable found items at Schiphol

I'm already in the car on my way home when my phone rings. I answer. A service employee from KLM. Asking if I might have forgotten ‘something’ on the plane. ‘OH SHIT! My See Buy Fly bag with wooden elephants from Thailand! I'm on my way there now!’ So sweet, those attentive KLM employees. I can tell you that it doesn't happen like this at every airline. There are also plenty of travelers who completely forget that they left something on the plane and are never called. Just imagine how many poor little elephants are collected at Schiphol each year.

63,000 objects to be exact. No, not elephants, but that many lost items end up at the Lost & Found department at Schiphol. Those items, an average of 173 items per day, are lost or accidentally left behind all over the airport. What do we lose the most? Clothing items. Followed by payment cards, tablets, and wallets. And every now and then, there's just a quirky found item. Something that even at the Lost & Found desk they think: okay, what do we do with this? Schiphol made a list.

1. 10 thousand dollars

I find it pretty damn hard to explain that those bucks actually belong to you. By the way, the traveler in question managed to do so by explaining very specifically how it was packed.

2. Cradle

With mattress and all. How do you forget things like this, you wonder.

3. Bag of dried beetles

Okay, gross. I would intentionally leave that behind at Schiphol, so I can understand that one.

4. Rolex watch

Simone, are you hearing this? Left-behind. Can you even imagine?

5. Sander

Handy Harry went on a trip prepared. Without stuff.

6. Brace

Yikes. Took it off while eating and then forgot it?

7. Snow chains

Pretty annoying when you find out on vacation that they are still at the airport. 1240 kilometers away.

8. Trombone

And this friend wasn't the only one of his kind. A total of 43 musical instruments were left behind at Schiphol last year. Even violins. Even electric pianos. And just patiently waiting for their owner to come pick them up...

9. Rice cooker,

White liiiist, brown liiiist, always nice that list. But it's handy if you take it home with you, right?

10. Sleep apnea machine

And then have the worst terror ever when that particular passenger just steps onto your night flight. Hi there, snore alert, how you doin’?
