The biggest wish of May
A day in Melania's closet
It was much talked about, the official state dinner that Donald and Melania Trump hosted last week. Where Donald Trump once said that it was over with the expensive state banquets and he would just serve hamburgers and fries (Trump clearly overslept the day refinement and good taste were handed out), Melania decided to go all out. It became the most expensive and grandest spectacle in the White House since the inauguration.
If I ever wanted to sign on as a page at the White House (or as a guest, that works too), it would have been that particular day. What a waterfall of beauty. From Ivanka's pink tulle dress by Rodarte (she chose an American brand, but a trendy, young variant and not the old American classics like Ralph Lauren) to everything, everything, everything from Brigitte Macron. Madame Macron was toute Vuitton these days. From the soft pink coat, her ecru ensemble, and of course the floor-length evening gown she wore during dinner. Luckily it was so long that you couldn't see the label with her name that was stuck to the floor.
But then Melania, who according to Brigitte Macron has so little space in the White House that she can't even open a window, decided to show off. Because maybe she can smile and nod and wave graciously, clothing can speak and Melania knows that. So she dove into the books with stylist Hervé Pierre and created the best cross-pollination between both cultures. A touch of French here, a splash of chauvinistic American there. The white skirt and long blazer by Michael Kors couldn't count on a thumbs up from me, but the statement hat (which The New York Times praised for the strength and invincibility it represents) made up for a lot. But the rest... A big orgy of French and American designers. The black cape by Givenchy, heels by Christian Louboutin, a black clutch by Dior, a wide belt by Ralph Lauren (her house designer who also made her inauguration outfit, which I think was a perfect choice) and a small Italian detour to a black Dolce & Gabbana dress.
For the world, it would of course be best if Trump traded the White House for his New York tower today, but now that we have to deal with him, can I secretly enjoy Melania's creations from a distance? Ah, please?
