The ups and downs of Lindsay Lohan

If you had asked me in 2004 which celeb I thought was extremely cool, I would have immediately said: Lindsay. The red hair, the freckles, the distinctive voice, and of course her brilliant role in Mean Girls. What on earth has happened to this woman? How sad? And how is she doing now? It's time for a trip down memory lane.

Where it all began? Anything but Mean Girls, I can tell you. At just three years old, Lindsay's career as a model begins. She appears in over 60 commercials, but also in Disney films, American soap operas; you name it. Actually, there is no one I know who became so famous at such a young age as Lindsay. After the success of Mean Girls, she is hounded by the paparazzi. It eats away at her.

The song ‘Rumors’ comes out in 2004, in which she sings desperately: ‘I’m tired of rumors starting. I’m sick of being followed. I’m tired of people lying. Sayin’ what they want about me. Why can’t they back up off me. Why can’t they let me live…’ In 2006, it really goes downhill. Drug use, alcohol addictions, reckless driving, anorexia, jail time here, lawsuit there… Is there even a month in which Lohan doesn’t make the headlines with her problems? Lindsay eventually goes to a rehab clinic in LA and then moves to London to find ‘peace’. She enters into a relationship with a woman and starts meditating.

Shortly after that, it goes wrong again. Lindsay has to detox again, steals everything she can get her hands on, and in 2011 spends more time at the police station than at home on the couch.

A few years later, the actress clears her Instagram account. It gets quiet around Lindsay for a while, and we almost forget her, until the point that the news comes out that the actress has converted to Islam. She starts learning French and Arabic in Dubai. Her accent changes more each year, just like her face. In 2018, she visits Turkey and Syria multiple times to advocate for the refugee crisis.

And now? This week, the news comes out that Lindsay is documenting her ups and downs again for a reality show. Starting next month, she will be followed by cameras for a new MTV show, produced by the team behind Keeping Up With The Kardashians. No joke. You would think that a donkey doesn’t stumble twice over the same stone, but nothing could be further from the truth. What we are going to see? Lindsay's life as a businesswoman in Greece. Wait a minute, businesswoman? Greece? Did I miss something?

Anyway: what happened to our Barbie on a micro level happened to Lindsay on a global scale. Being swallowed by the monster of fame. It remains sad. The only thing I can say is: I hope you are happy, Lindsay. And if that is in Greece, somewhere with a mountain goat and your own restaurant, then I wish you all the luck with that. My only tip? Just leave those cameras out of it. Then you have my respect.
